What Could Have Happened…Part 3

Chapter 1: A New Mission

Captain Jason Silarn was looking over his scan results of the last few days. He and his ship had been given the mission to explore a new sector for possible colonization and there was much to see and record. He was looking over a stack of mineral scans when a call came in, one of his scouts had seen something, something upsetting, and he was returning with the scans at top speed. At first he thought perhaps a Paranid ship was out here exploring too, they had a habit of showing up just about anywhere but only a few minutes more and he’d know. The Corporal ran in and did a snappy salute and handed him the chip. He added it to his reader and saw the info. There in plain view were three fighters, all heavies, all unknown, and they nearly stopped next to him before he was sure he had enough info to report and then he bolted back to the ship. He had said nothing and they asked nothing, it was a little odd, but then He didn’t have clearance for first contact, and perhaps they didn’t either. It was a new kink to this mission and he turned and saluted the man and said,

“Good job, Sergeant, we will take it from here.” And the man stood, slightly confused and said,

“Sir, that’s Corporal, sir,” And waited a second as Jason smiled.

“Not anymore, Sergeant, please go get some rest and new orders will await you in the morning.” And he saluted the new Sergeant to his immediate glee and he walked away smiling.

Jason called Argon Intelligence and waited to get to see Ban Danna himself. This was a top priority call and he knew certain security devices, etc had to operating before they could talk. In a minute he was there, looking very busy and asking what the security was for.

“I have a first contact situation here.” Jason said as Ban looked up seriously and smiled.

“Do we know anything about them yet?” he asked and Jason sent the first scans on a protected carrier wave directly to his office and in a minute he was reviewing them.” Very nice design, they look very fast and heavy fighters flying in formation. Definitely not pirates or Paranid.” He seemed to be talking to himself, and Jason waited.

“Do I have permission for a first contact sir?” Jason asked finally and Ban Danna thought about it seriously for a moment.

“Yes, on the condition that you are monitored for security purposes. If they try anything we want to know immediately what and how they did it, if they are friendly, then we need to know that too. Do your best and activate the auto reporting immediately and move to intercept this new friend and see what they think of us.” Ban Danna said and Jason saluted and the link went closed. He opened his command codes and set them to auto report and closed them. For the next few days, at least, ever word and picture on this ship was being recorded, and he ordered the ship to full power and started towards the coordinates at standard speed.

Jason grabbed his hat and walked to the bridge. He sat down and looked forward wondering what lay ahead. If these new people had the technology that it appeared they had they could be a big edition to the argon federation, if they were friendly, and if they wanted to be honest about it. Argon Intelligence was a stickler for details and he just hoped these new people were willing to be just as thorough as they were prepared to be.

They traveled in Seta mode for a few minutes and were getting close to the co ordinates the pilot gave him. If they were still there he’d be glad to be the first to say hello, and hope that it started a good relationship. If not, he had several squadrons at his command, but that was for emergencies and this wasn’t it yet.

Lt. Karen Thomas was in her Raptor patrolling for the new ship. They were sent out because the Raptor had a better long term living condition than a Viper, they were faster, but very cramped for a long trip and she was sure they would be out here a while. She touched the bar in her pocket and licked her lips, she was so hungry, but that was for dinner and it was still 3 hours away. They had been on rations now for a month. Two ration bars a day and she even had to sneak a bar into the freighter where her mom and dad lived because the military got just a tad more than anyone else, for obvious reasons, and she felt bad when her parents were sharing her normal ration. The big problem was, she was on a long patrol with one of those guys, a thief and a scrounger, and he always had extra and he offered her some too, for a price. She told him to bug off more times than she could remember, but he was persistent, and she was very, very hungry.

There he sat, wrinkling the paper on another bar and smiling and she really thought about smacking him for it, but she was a Lt. and he was Sergeant, and she’d get in trouble for that too. She concentrated on her work and demanded he did too, and for a while he put the food away and did. She really hoped there was someone friendly out here, and she hoped they found them soon.

Captain Silarn had every scanner in the ship running when he came into the coordinates the pilot gave him, there was nothing there and he started a search pattern at best speed and he was sure they could detect a signal, or see a radar image from very far away. His man had given him good info, now it was his turn to act, and that’s what he intended to do.

It was several hours later and even Jason was getting tired; they made another adjustment and started back along the path. So far nothing and he knew they may have moved on, or they had better scanning equipment and were purposely staying away. So he started a daring plan, he had the ships computer send out welcomes on every known frequency and then he’d wait to see where that would lead. If someone heard them then they could meet and it gave him a sort of long range signal that the scanners couldn’t match and the calls began.

Lt. Thomas was making another pass through the sector when the idiot started his **** again, and she was in no mood, she informed him again, for the forth time, he was going on report and he just laughed, in these hard times being on report was the least of his worries and she knew it. She was about to make her final move and actually hit him when a signal was heard, faint at first and then louder as they moved towards it. She demanded silence and got it for a minute, and even this idiot could hear something, and the harassment stopped suddenly and she recognized a coms signal. It wasn’t right on the frequency they used but it was there, and she started towards it calling on the closest frequency they could to match it.
She called back to Galactica that she had a signal and was tracking it and commander Adama was happy enough to smile, for the first time in weeks she was sure. He told her she had first contact permission and she nodded and thanked him for his trust and he nodded saying “don’t let us down” and she nodded back and went back to tracing the call and closing on it as fast as possible.

Captain Silarn was just getting ready to get a bite to eat when the signal was heard, the computer said it was on a different frequency and they adjusted as fast as possible. It was getting louder and he knew they were close and homed in on their signal and started that way. In a minute he called across and asked if anyone was there and for a minute there was no answer and then a scream and cheer was heard and he smiled. He had found them and they saw a small ship, running towards them and he called all stop and they stopped just short of his nose they called and said that they were asking for first contact, and he agreed, and the scans said they were humans, one man and one female and he asked them to dock. They swung around and their ship was let in and the Captain rushed to see the new people as the auto reporting was sure to be sending back all the gory details about their ship and the occupants.

Chapter 2: Help Arrives

Karen walked from her ship on wobbly legs, the pressure was on her to make a good impression, and she wasn’t sure she had it in her to do it. She was met by security that made sure she wasn’t armed and the door behind them opened and the Captain walked out with a big smile. She stuck out her hand and smiled sweetly and said who she was and he told her again his rank and name. The official formalities had officially started and she smiled. Politics wasn’t her thing but you’d be surprised what you can do when you have no choice, and she smiled her best smile and asked Jason if Argon was really friendly and he smiled and nodded. She started a tale, of a long trip and short supplies and he almost asked her to stop. These poor people were desperate, and they had found them on the brink of starvation. She was nearly in tears when he stopped her and asked to come with him. They went into a conference room and he ordered them food and they eat like they hadn’t seen anything in weeks. He sat back smiling and drinking his coffee. The politics could wait, he had to help these people now and then they could help their fellow travelers when they could talk more clearly and think more precisely.

The meal was over in record time, for sure and the two looked absolutely ecstatic. He asked if they were ok now and they both nodded. Jason asked who was the spokesman and Karen said she was. The Fleet had chosen her as the ranking officer to ask for help. They were all in bad condition and Captain Silarn nodded. If they died of starvation it would be his fault and he told them to ask their Commander to come see him face to face, and send a freighter for some emergency supplies. Karen smiled wider than he had ever seen and pulled out her coms and called back to the fleet, saying that they were friendly, and willing to help, the captain wanted to see the Commander personally and he nodded saying he was on the way, and she said to send a freighter for emergency supplies and Commander Adama smiled a weak smile. He hadn’t heard anything so wonderful in recent history, and he nodded and closed the link.

In a matter of minutes a Viper pulled into the Hanger bay and Commander Adama stepped off to shake Captain Silarns hand. They walked together and talked about the trip and where they were headed and Commander Adama was definitely trying his best to keep up a good front, but weeks of deprivation was taking it toll and Captain Silarn took him into his office and got him something to eat too, but he wouldn’t accept until he was sure that the freighter was getting something to take back. Captain Silarn was almost in tears himself, and he opened his coms right in front of the Commander and told them to load the fleet freighter with half of everything on board and send it back immediately to the fleet. The he ordered their own freighter to return to Argon space to get more, all they could carry and return, and it was done. Then and only then, did Commander Adama sit down and eat the first hot meal he had in many weeks and they both sat back and talked well into the evening.

Captain Silarn got a message a few hours later and he took it in his office. Ban Danna had seen and heard and was shocked by what he was. The freighter Captain Silarn sent back was being loaded with wheat and cahoonas to the roof and it would be back by the end of the day. Even though trading info and technology was a good plan, first they had to see to it they lived, and Captain Silarn nodded and said he was going to ask to see this ship, this Galactica and to help protect the fleet while they were here, and Ban agreed. If they would trust them that far, then helping them was the least they could do.

Captain Silarn called back the next morning and said he had supplies for them and asked their location. Commander Adama seemed to wait a minute and finally gave them his current location and Captain Silarn asked if he could accompany the freighter to see the fleet. His superior had demanded they protect the fleet while they were in Argon space and even though he looked a lot better this morning, Commander Adama smiled a weak smile and agreed. He said they could help protect them here, but he asked them to stay well back from the fleet to avoid panic, and Captain Silarn also agreed. He followed the freighter and as they past a wall of asteroids there lay the fleet, dead ahead, and Captain Silarn turned the carrier to the right and followed the asteroid belt while the freighter went straight in and did its delivery.

Commander Adama watched it all on his scanners and smiled. The Argon Captain was as good as his word. He stayed well back next to the asteroids and left the freighter come in alone. It docked and it took over an hour to unload the ship, with everyone helping, and he was all smiles. These blocks of meat were great, being compressed they could be broken up and made into anything, and the whole fleet got a hot meal and heard the story of the friendly Argons and they cheered and applauded. Now the real negotiations could be gin and President Laura Roslyn asked to see captain Silarn and he agreed. He was met on the docks of the Galactica by an honor guard and taken right to a conference room where he met the president and Commander Adama, wearing his best uniform, and starting to look a little better after a good meal or two. Captain Silarn repeated what Ban Danna had said, they could wait to negotiate for info and technology until the fleet was in better shape and they said they appreciated it. They answered all his questions about there travels and what had happened and he shook his head in sadness. Argon had seen some wars, and other troubles, but nothing like this, and he swore they would be safe while he and his ship were here, and they thanked him profusely.

He ordered another food drop and they all smiled and the ship jumped away with the seta at full power, but no one asked anything about it, not yet and another load of food was in place in a few hours and Jason was starting to feel a lot better about this now that their new friends were getting around better and starting to seem a lot happier. Now the official negotiations could start and he offered to host them on his vessel, and Commander Adama and the President agreed, and the long process of talking and sharing began.

While President Roslyn was happy talking about food and medical supplies, Commander Adama was thrilled to exchange weapons designs and specs. He offered them the design for his flak cannons and in exchange they offered him light missiles for fighter defense. He offered the design of their planetary attack nukes, and they offered him Hornet missiles. The fleet was getting well stocked up with food and the medical supplies helped dozens who needed it badly, and the military was getting a few more smiles daily as the supplies came in to defend them for weeks to come.

Captain Silarn was doing his best to help out, and Ban Danna was happy with what they were getting in exchange. The Colonial Fleet was welcomed into Argon space and they appreciated it, but they had a destiny to meet and everyone understood. Some of the Argon doctors came and helped with the sick and injured and they too exchanged techniques and tools. Commander Adama saw his fleet becoming the healthy, happy group it once was and he knew they were going to be good again for a long time.
