The trials and tribulations of Aerus Elles

About first fights and becoming too overconfident

Now I was a rich man and flying with three ships I decided to find a safe parking space first. I glanced over the sector map and decided that my base would become Cloudbase South East. It was still a very safe sector but close enough to dangerous pirates to take my new fighter for a spin.

When I arrived in Cloudbase South East I docked all three ships at the Federal Argon Shipyard. I must say that I was in awe of the sheer size of this structure.

During my trip there I had decided that I would sell my humble buster and use it to upgrade my Pericles to the max and take it for a spin and see if I could find some pirate butt to kick.

The sale of the Buster gave me 247k credits. I had already earned back my initial investment and the morning where I had only 1000 credits seemed already a long time ago.

I bought all possible upgrades and now my Pericles, which I had named Starbuck, top speed was 251. This would give me ability to run from a unwanted fight against most ships.

Now I was really ready for some adventure. I left my Eclipse, which I had named Galactica, docked at the Argon Shipyard for now. First it was time to have some fun!

Over the course of the day I was able to destroy the following ships: 1 Discoverer, 1 Discoverer Hauler, 2 Fujin, 1 FujinSentinel, 3 Xenon N, 1 Pericles Raider, 1 Pirate Harrier and 1 Pirate Harrier Hauler. 11 ships in total. No one was calling me a rookie now! Ok, I was still only classed as a Trainee but it was a definite improvement.

I had also taken on several missions, most of them being astroid scanning missions or easy protection missions. I did however boldly accept one very hard mission with a reward of a whopping 80k credits.

I met this guy in Freedom's Reach who told me the story how this guy had tricked him out of his whole fortune. I felt compelled to do something about this injustice and so accepted his request for revenge. Of course the 80k reward might have had something to do with it as well.

When I flew out toward the coordinates given to me I thought what I'd just done. 80K reward suggested that this guy was not some push over. I was seriously wondering if I had done the wise thing by accepting this mission!

The coordinates given to me were located in Danna's Chance. As soon as I got through the gate my radar bleeped red. I had jumped right on top of my target!

I quickly identified it and to my surprise it was nothing more than a Discoverer Hauler. Was this the brutal and malicious master criminal I was led to believe. If I approached him at the right angle I should be able to take him it with one pass.

Turning my ship his way I approached him without giving anything away. Then at 1.5km I aimed and fired all my four lasers. Within 10 seconds his shields were down and 10 seconds later all that was left was rubble. I was amazed at how quick it had gone, I felt like a space version of a ninja assassin.

Moments later I was rudely brought back to reality as suddenly several ships turned red on my radar. It seemed my target had friends and were now very angry at me. My shields were suddenly reduced by half. I had to get out of here and quick. As I turned my ship to the jump gate I heard the sickening sound of a missile locking onto me. As my shields were now I was not sure if I would survive a direct missile hit.

As I got closer to my rescue to bleeping got more frequent indicating that the missile was closing in on me. I feared the worst when the beeping almost became a constant tone when the jump gate pulled me in towards safety. Close shave does not describe how close I was to a certain death.

I now realised that despite my initial combat experience I was still a very fickle and insignificant entity in this vast universe. I decided to never forget this almost deadly lesson.

Having arrived safely on the other side I instantly forgot my fear of moments ago and all I could think about was that I completed a very hard assassin mission with a 80k reward.

When I met up with my temporary employer I showed him the video feed of my turret which showed his nemesis being blown to smithereens. He looked genuinely delighted, even when he transferred 80k to me. He must have really hated this guy!
