M1 Pickups

Rate this Entry
Celebratory drinkies over and it’s back to business – the two abandoned M1s in sector 1716. By the time I get back into the sector the Xenon presence is somewhat reduced, though still substantial. After some flying around to draw the Xenon away I head for the Condor as it’s the nearest. Transferring my jump drive and e-cells across I order it to jump out to Heliopsaris Omega and dock at the SY while I fly after it manually to get my JD back. Transferring all the remaining equipment (not much unfortunately) to Scavenger 1 which I had pre-positioned there, I sell the beaten-up Condor for about 15mil and head back to sector 1716 to repeat the process with the Colossus. This is a keeper though, so after getting it safe I send her chugging up North to somewhere safe to sit and self-repair and fix up all the M3s that I pick up in future. New Hampshire seems a likely spot.

Only after I successfully complete this salvage operation do I remember that the capships have built-in JDs which never seem to be destroyed and so all I had needed to do was either beam over some e-cells and jump out myself along with the prize, or do the work in an M3 – claim, dock, freight transfer the e-cells and jump. Doh!

Lesson learned for next time. I have the credits in the bank from the sale of the Condor to fix up the K, so I start the self-repair and send Scavenger 1 to rendezvous with her to transfer the colossal shields that I got off the Condor. That will give her full shields, though not all the best types – need to keep an eye out in combat zones for better versions to swap out. Armament wise the K is missing just two main guns but is down to about 50% in the secondary turrets, so I’ll park her in Heliopsaris Omega until I can find replacements for these. I pick up the two abandoned Ps now I have access to Teladi and Paranid space, and combining the equipment from them both and a few spares from Scavenger 1 left me with 1 M6 escort for the K and a million or so credits for the sale of the stripped P.

While repairs are progressing I decide to cruise back to Argon space to see if there’s any action over there or en route, plus the fact that I’m still looking for somewhere to make my self-imposed penance of a charitable donation. Until then the money is ‘resting in my account’...

The perfect ship to pick up bailed M1s, M2s or other ships with built-in jumpdrives in hostile sectors is the Octopus Raider, a Boron M5. 533 m/s top speed (so you can outrun all Xenon or Khaak ships easily), and it can carry 40 energy cells if you only equip it with shields (no weapons). Furthermore, it comes with a Triplex Scanner, so it's also perfect for scouting.
