Memoirs of TXU - Part 4

In any development, especially on software created by someone else, there is a large learning curve, where you try things, they work for a bit, and then you realise you should have done something different at the start.

X was exactly like that.

When we started changing some of the files, we got some nice new features. Later we decided to add to these files, and we hit a brick wall. Most of the files needed editing in such a way that we couldn't keep compatibility with saved games. It required a restart.

RESTART.

That's a scary word. In forcing players to restart we were worried that they might move away or discard Xtended. If we were gonna have to do the restart, we wanted to do it well, and make it worth it.

The development of Xtended 0.7 was born. We intended on packing lots of features, including a new universe, in to the mod.

Development on Xtended 0.7 took a long time. Months. At times we never thought it would be finished. The fans were hankering after the new mod in a way none of us ever expected. We launched tidbit after tidbit to keep the interest alive, and eventually, on the 26th of May 2007, Xtended 0.7a Revelations was released.

We did as much as we could to prepare for the release. We had the files stored on another TXU server to permit downloading while keeping the site up and running, we had mirror sites, but nothing prepared us for the reality.

Within minutes of the release, the main TXU download server went down. It went down three times in the space of several hours. It ate up it's bandwidth allowance for the month in that short time, and we had to expand it, and find other download sources.

Eventually Egosoft took an unprecedented move and offered to host the major files for the download, something we gladly accepted just so that we could meet the fans demands for the mod.

Very quickly TXU became a hubbub of activity. The team worked hard and continued to develop and bug fix over the next few months.

As time progressed though, we realised, TXU once again needed an overhaul to a better system.

Part 5 of our history beckons...

Moko, you must keep this on! Reading your short story is amazing. You are putting your heart in it and the feelings just flow...

Now... where are your books!? You didn't write any book? What are you waiting for?

Thanks for the comments matey. I like writing, just never get time for it very much.

I remember this mod when it was "only" a few M7's. It sure has grown over the years. To think that the Tiger used to be one of the biggest things in the mod. Takes you back.
