Its good to read our ego's are completely outclassed by theirs!
Specially Omniscraper seems to have had his head stuck a tad too much in one of Peg's engines

Dear comrades,

Don't be so sad. We all know what the difference between X3 and Freespace 2 is. We should appreciate what they are doing because we are going to need them. Let them fire their cannons and missiles; let them train very hard.
When the real thing comes, we will need a lot of dumb pilots to cover our asses and maneuver our fleet into safety. I will personally put Omniscaper into first line of defense. (Actually we should name one of our pilots in BSG mission mod after him and put him into a rusted viper mark II to save material)… The better they are fewer resources we’ll need to accomplish our mission.

They also got a guy called 'Max' composing some of the music. Some of its really good and downloadable...... given me a few more ideas  for composing later on my Christmas vacation.

indeed, perhaps it should be pointed out mox has just been doing this mod on the side for fun

just imagine if the entire Xtended team turned its attention to the BSG mod (calm down loyal fans, Xtended is still top priority  )

Its cozy in there.

Anyways, some healthy competative posturing will only yield higher quality output from both projects. All I saw in our thread was X3 & FS2 comparisons. Apples and oranges. If some of the forumites at game-warden are perceived as offensive to you folks , I apologize. I would not hold your team responsible for your forumite's enthusiastic support and competition bashing for your cause.

I have no beef with other BSG mods like Homeworld2 and Battlefield 2 mods nor do I intend on having any with your team. Good luck with your BSG endeavours and enjoy that rather pretty engine.

Figured I'd drop by from the BtRL forum and say hi.

I'm one of the mission designers from BtRL. Like Omni I welcome the competition. I don't think you should take anything the developers on our forum said. I'm sure that like you we just want our mod to be the best one on the net.

I reckon it will be good for both of us to have something to compete against. And also to be able to look forwards to having a good game to play that we haven't already sucked most of the enjoyment out of with endless playtesting :D

Thanks guys, thats very much appriciated.
Welcome to this -pretty humble?- section of our beloved metal-polish X3 gathering btw.
Knowing what quality you represent, I'd lie if I commented to look forward on the feedback at hand but simultaniously knowing good quality comes with a certain amount of headaches produced only by equal nitpicks as yourstruely I can't help to say 'plz fire when rdy if the target is worthy of a good shot'

hmmmm u know mox this doesnt always have to be about competing, who knows u may even consult with them on the balancing part of the ships(assuming there r any similarities between X3/FS2 )
too bad they werent modding in X3 coz if they did then we would have had some awesome competition:D

Karajorma
12-12-2006, 11:47 PM
Well I don't mind bouncing ideas around with you guys. I'm certain that thinking and talking about how to balance things will only improve both mods. For instance I'd love to know how you guys plan to handle the HUD. The BtRL team are planning to go over to cockpits instead of pure HUD in the full game (the code and model changes won't be done for our demo) but we won't be getting rid of all of the HUD most likely. I'd be interested in knowing how you manage to find ships behind you etc in your mod without using HUD elements that we don't see in the show.

One other area that might be useful to bounce ideas around too is about fanon. Lets face it there isn't that much BSG canon out there so any mission designer is going to have to make a fair bit of stuff up. It might be nice to compare notes on that sort of thing.

Syklon
13-12-2006, 12:13 AM
well you can animate parts of the cockpit in X3, so for a full BSG conversion I atleast would consider removing the radar from the hud and just have a version animated as part of the cockpit

weapon switching and crosshairs you would have to think about

Mishra
13-12-2006, 07:44 AM
While cockpits do add much to the feel I tend to switch 'm off after a short while. Everything for unobstructed view.
I never use X3 cockpits and often switch the X3 hud off just to enjoy the view more.
If going for cockpits Í'd keep it as minimal as possible.

But that's just me...

Mox
13-12-2006, 07:47 AM
X3 Cockpits are bugged anyway...for one you dont see the sun when cockpits are on, and secondly you see the cockpit when cockpits are on..which is even more annoying!

Karajorma
13-12-2006, 10:22 AM
Ah. So you're mostly in the same boat as us. The HUD isn't very BSG but the game doesn't work very well without one :)

Star_Raider15
13-12-2006, 01:06 PM
i myself never liked plying with the cockpit, it very much annoyes me because i cant see the enemy ships and i generaly turn it off

Mishra
13-12-2006, 03:13 PM
The FS-hud allways worked very well for me, customisable to even the displaycolor i believe. I wouldn't mind sticking to it.

Then again, your mod is a total conversion and it's aim is probably a little more towards realism then Volitions was at the time. Whatever you decide, I'm sure your mod will be popular.

What about storyline, are you gonna do a linear mission structure like FS? or will players have more influence on developements?

DarkWrath
13-12-2006, 03:18 PM
Well , I can't wait for that demo... I've been tracking the forum for so time so I know it will be only a viper vs raider combat , but those trailers really made me curious. About the hud , so you intend to use cockpits instead of it?

Karajorma

Depends on whether the other mission makers let me go wild or not :) The problem with non-linear campaigns is that they're a lot more work as you have to come up with twice as many missions after the branch (or much more complicated ones). Personally I'd like to have the player have much more of an influence than in FS2. We certainly have a lot more tools for doing that then we did when Volition put together the main campaign.

I think the best option is to make it so that the user can select whether they want them or not. That would require a code change but probably a fairly minor one. It's a graphical code change though so I'd have to check with one of the other coders to see if it was possible as I only dabble with other areas of the code.

The demo will be HUD only since we're not happy with the cockpit model yet anyway :)

I've got no problem exchanging my music for some of Max's if they would agree to share resources....

I saw your post on the forum but it's kinda dead actually, so i post here :) You were asking about sounds and instruments so here is it :

EAST WEST QUANTUM LEAP : Stormdrums, RA (ethnic), Symphonic Gold and colossus... more than 230 gigabytes of samples. With that you can do what you want, and everything you want for a bsg-like music

Besides that, i'm working with a lot of plugins, waves and native instruments, there's just a matter of program / plugins configuration to get the good sound.

What you're thinking about when you say "sharing ressources" ?

Elffin
23-12-2006, 11:14 AM
Thanks for your response Max - I did read your reply and i'l have to save some cash in order to buy it!! May I also say how much I like your work.

What I meant with 'exchanging resources' is we might be able to swap 'arrangements' of BSG style compositions. I'm sure that this would be beneficial to the BTRL or XTM BSG mod in that the compositions (which can and do take a lot of work to create) would be heard by larger audience who (hopefully) will also appreciate the effort involved.

If you send me a private message with your e-mail address I'll send an mp3 (currently uncomplete) arrangement of Gibbs' 'Are you alive' to see what you think. If you dont want to 'swap' I will understand but it seems to be an excellent opportunity to lessen the 'workload', I am willing to send my Sonar files (CWB or midi) and I wouldn't be worried if you decide to rearrange the material.

Thanks

Edath

I'm not really working with sonar actually... that's bad :P (Cubase Addict)

I thiink about the swapping arrangement thing is not a problem but i had to talk about that with Omni before, even if it's my work, i don't know if he wants to share the various products of BtRL.

I just pmed you :)

after 1 year without playing Freespace 2 itīs not easy to learn all the commands again and some features arenīt available or arenīt useful anymore in BtRL

a example:

There was a feature to change the setings for the energy for 3 parts of the ship:

engine (afterburner) ... weapons energy and last but not least the shields ...

-In BtRL there are no shields ... and the weapons use amo ... so this feature isnīt usefull and so itīs not available ...

-The feature to organize the shield energy isnīt in BtRL cause there are no shields ...

I spent two hours in the tutorial ... after a lilte non multiplayer multiplayergame Iīm better in killing some enemys ...

I'm still stuck at the "Birth of a Legend" mission... My lack of FS2 activity in the last year took it's toll. But I must agree , it rocks flying vipers , and every toaster killed is a great achievement(given that it takes me 10 minutes to take one down!)

Good job BTRL team , we can't wait for the full game!

A fan community is buolding a game base on BSG galactica so far there is a small demo out

Battle star galactica Beyond red line i played it and LOVED it there is also a small patch that need to be downloaded

http://www.game-warden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3502

you will find the patch in the sticky of the forum there.

THAT is what i called a space flight simulator made on an old engine but hell that is fun and the graphics are not ugly at all. This game show a lot of potential so try it guys.

( well even if its a good space sim it downt mean i dont like X3, i love open end game like X3 thats why im sticky to it easy to mod lot of addition and X3 will always be the best space game for me. )

Yes BTRL is fun!
One feature i really do like is the glide option... Think Cycrow on ES tried to create a similar script which enabled the same newtonian physics... havn't checked up lately on the progress.

thats why we call it space sim ;) CANT be a simulator AND easy in same time hehehe, or else it wouldnt be a simulator, but a game :D.

Anyway BTRL to my opinion is one of the best *action* simulator out there, energy management and such, if we could get newtonian physic in X3? Energy management and stuff like that? X3 ( or later X game ) would get the monopole on Space combat like WoW did for MMORPG.

They are so close to *perfection* i really do hope that the X series will live forever :D
