View Full Version : [Model] Battlestar Galactica
This thread will discuss the Battlestar Galactica Model
Galactica is pretty much done..some minor texture work but I\'d say currently 95% rdy.

Last image is original Zoic Studio\'s (inferiority complex inducing) texture template so you can all reference
for inconcistencies. If I\'m not mistaken everything is pretty much ok..if not plz do tell cause I want this baby to shine as best she can since this will increase the possibilities of us being allowed to use the Pegasus mesh also.
Poly\'s are pretty insane but thats with all the Greeble which can and maybe should still be reduced.
206K in total, from which 48K goes to the 12 Railgun turrets, the other 12 had to go due to X3 cockpit impraticalities.
Note the 4 under her Bow-Head, deployed in rdy forward firing position.

Nice work Mox. I can\'t see anything untoward with the textures at this moment. Very much looking forward to meeting her down some dark alley (or is it I\'m not looking forward...).

How big is this monster going to be, say, relative to an Argon Colossus?
Approx 3 times the length, 6 times the width and 1.5 times the height.
Which combined makes for about x-times the total hullmass (sorry, I can only count to 6).

Mox - that is a fantastic Galactica - I was working on conversion of a LWmodel from WJaspers? (I think that's his name) and even though I could get it into the game - I have had so many problems with textures (haven't even thought about guns yet) ... No that I have seen yours - I think I'll wait - any idea when she'll be ready? Is it possible to download now? Or do we all have to wait for the MOD? If so, do you have any ETA (rough estimate)
Your efforts are Much appreciated! :-)

Do you mean the mod, the ship, or both? Cuz the ship looks damn sexy right about now. Do you plan on releasing the ships separately? (Not that I wouldn't download the mod; it's just that mods take more time than ships, ya know?)

See my thread in the X3 Scripts and Modding Forums. Im putting out ships seperately while Mox works on his Mod. Wont be as good as these will be in the Mod when Mox has finished, but some are from Coxxons Whole Frakkin Fleet Package. I'd put up a link but the forums are down atm by the looks.
Continuing to boldly go where no Cylon-sexdoll has gone before,
this batch features:
-Reduced the blue on the main hullplating.
-Switched the contrast from mainhull(dark) to ribs(light) to vice versa in order to reduce specular reflections on the ribs ingame whilst maintaining contrast so to see both distinctively.
(and if this doesnt work I'll just remove the specular maps alltogether).
-Started with a (currently kinda piss-poorly mapped) Greeble Texture for the mainhull.
-Improved the main turrets (dont mind the grapefruits, those will glow ingame, making them into nice glowing grapefruits).
-Added what must have been a zillion point defence turrets, totally invisible on the renders but at least you'll see them when you crash into Galactica whilst trying to dock or someting!
-Improved some of the fake-bumpmapping on parts like the pod-extrusion thingies (Currently there's still no compiler offering real normal/bump map support).
-Improved mapping on certain pannel area's (I hope)
-Added the -totally useless- bottom batteries for eye-candy purposes.
Still todo:
-Aft-section (detailing, improve engine color, mapping, sub-engine shapes..well,...basically the entire aft-section)
-Lightmap for the pod-hangars
-Lightmap for pod-retract area's
-Lightmap for Galactica-name area's
-Restore the a-symmetric panneling on the back at the top batteries.
-Fix certain panneling texture inconsistencies
-Launchbays
-Boxing Arena
-Forward observatory with loungechairs
-Model myself a 1:1 copy of Anastasia Dualla

No way I believe that..it's a nice model, it's not THAT good.
Tons of stuff out there of much better quality.
It will do fine for our little mod though :)

Truly, the only thing I can think of that's better is Zoic's model that's used in the show, and only God, I mean you, knows how many polys it would take to approximate that!
Mind you I didnt make this mesh.
I did spent considerable time on it poly- and texturetuning it to X3 specs but I'm nowhere near as good a modeller as AldrikG who should take full credit for this masterpiece (and for letting us use it!!).
I recently 'stumbled' upon his latest BSG renders and I'm still gathering the pieces of my jaw on the floor....I'm not impressed easily but this sure did the trick:
http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/3d-wips/1239-battlestar-galactica-13.html
If your talking about comparissons between the Original Zoic model then imo AldrikG's is the only one which is actually better then the 'real deal'...which by itself should be considered a phenomenal achievement.

indeed i've seen i've seen many of AldrikG's meshes on the scifi meshes forums and he pays alot of attention to detail

If I remember correctly you also had an eye on at Aldrik's Pegasus. Any success in obtaining his model?
For those who haven't seen it.....

Looking at those, and looking at Glactica, it just occured to me how much better Galactica looks than Pegasus. I used to think Pegasus looked cool.
But the Scifi Meshes models look almost untextured (And they could be. I wouldn'y know) but Mox's textures are really good. I want my Galactica now!

When your just modelling for the fun of it poly's aren't an issue ;)
Yes, SFM meshes are mostly untextured, for most modellers over there the challenge is to mimic every detail as authentically as possible and -like Stevio points out- without any restrictions on poly levels, some of these meshes reach whopping levels of details and polycounts.
Currently AldrikG' Pegasus weighs in at more then 800.000, which is approx 4x the maximum threshold for a X3 mesh on a High-End PC.
You can have a very very nice mesh, but it wont be worth a damn if it means you will have a slideshow ingame.
As for obtaining it...thats looking good...the question is if 'obtaining' it will get us any further but I'm confident it will be fine in the end...it's such a awesome mesh, it just has to work! I'll be sure to give it my best.

I'd love to get my hands on Zoics model of Galactica but the sucker weighs in at over 3 million polys which is a big ouch!

couldn't you use the same tool as deadly polygon crunsher i think its called
it reduces the poly's on high poly modles without lozing much detail
Who told you that fairytale?

I doubt it. I'll be the first to admit that I'm no modeler whatsoever, but I do know that there is a fine art to low-poly modeling. It takes a lot of skill to get a low poly model to look half-decent. Though I think 3DSMax has some tool or other that performs a similar function.

Trust me , polygon crunching is not the way to go... it won't cut the polies you want. Better to do it manually... And take ages doing it.
Polycrunching and similar stuff is only realy usefull when it comes to making level of details from the highpoly (lod-0 usually) mesh.
