CPU Wars: Intel v AMD

    Hi Guys,

I have recently been put into a position where replacing my motherboard and CPU was deemed necessary and so I went to my favoured supplier and picked an Intel 1150 solution based on the i7-4790K (a notional upgrade from my AMD FX 8350).

Thus far, I have barely noticed any difference despite the PCMark/Futuremark benchmarks showing a measurable improvement.

The one advantage from the upgrade is that I have finally been able to use my DDR3-1866 memory at full rating courtesy of Intel XMP and CPU support for better but one of the targeted CPU benchmarks shows worse performance (Passmark Integer - from 23180 to 20847, approx. 15% lower) after the upgrade which does give me some pause for thought (especially given most X-Trilogy - and possibly X-Rebirth - scripts use integer calculations rather than floating point).

However, given overall Passmark benchmark performance is around 30% higher (from 9280 to 11817) and single threaded performance is up by around 66% (from 1496 to 2480) my concerns are possibly unfounded.

I have only had a chance to do a quick run through with X-Rebirth since the upgrade but my findings so far indicate almost zero difference in-game but the aggregate CPU load seems have more than halved which is a better decrease in CPU load than I was expecting. It could be that the increase in memory speed had something to do with the better than expected gains.

    What do you guys think?
