The Faunus class is designed to satisfy one particular demand: to supply buyers in priority regions with weapons. The Faunus can produce weapons of all types and sizes, and as the need for arms varies over time, the ship's ability to relocate itself is a valuable asset to its owners. Whenever rumours or diplomatic relations causes a region to become unstable, the interest in purchasing weapons soars and the Faunus can arrive to profit from it.
Another advantage is the relocation of the ship according to available resources. If the captain receives an order to build weapons of a type for which he has little resources available, he can jump the ship to an asteroid field or to a sector where the resource is being produced in abundance, fill up the cargo bays and return to his customers while the weapons are being manufactured.
The Faunus was originally thought of by the Split, and first built on commission by
Teladi shipwrights. The builders, however, failed to satisfy the demands of the buyers and the contract was eventually cancelled - something which caused much dismay between the Split and Teladi governments. The Split started to build their own ships with the help of hired expertise. In accordance with the ambitions of the Split, the ships required to satisfy the ever-increasing demand for bigger and more powerful weapons had to grow larger and more complex. The Faunus is the largest ship built to date, and - according to its manufacturers - there is no weapon system it cannot reengineer and construct.

Transcript of intercepted call to Faunus Enterprises from a trader only known as 'Springer'.
*Comm ringing*
Voice:." Hello, Faunus Enterprises."
Springer: "Ah … yes, hello. Is that Faunus Enterprises?"
Voice: "I'm sorry, Sir; we at Faunus Enterprises are not allowed to give out company information, it's company policy."
Springer: "Who am I talking to, please?"
Voice: "I'm sorry Sir, we at Faunus Enterprises are not allowed to give out personnel information, it's company policy."
Springer: "Oh, OK - anyhow, I understand that you can make me anything."
Voice: "That’s correct, Sir. From a template, we at Faunus Enterprises can make just about anything. That is; if two of the items and the required stock to build it can fit in the hold of a Faunus Enterprise ship."
Springer: "I understand."
Voice: (mutters) "Then you’ll be the first."
Springer: "Can you make me a 500 MJ military shield?"
Voice: "Certainly, Sir. Supply us with the item, and we will copy it. No problem."
Springer: "How much will it cost?"
Voice: "Our standard tooling fee is 25,000 cr. per order. Plus some other materials."
Springer: "OK. The money's fine, but what other materials do I need to supply you with?"
Voice: "Some energy, food and ore. It's all in the standard text."
Springer: "How much of each would you require?"
Voice: "I'm sorry, Sir, we at Faunus Enterprises are not allowed to give out manufacturing information, it's company policy."
Springer: "Oh, that's helpful."
Voice: :You're welcome, Sir."
Springer: "Can you get these extra products for me?"
Voice: "Not really, Sir, we've had problems with the freight crew. All they want to do is fill our hold up with ore, until there's no room for anything else. Best if you bring supplies to us."
Springer: "So … How long would my order take?"
Voice: "I'm sorry, Sir, that's hard to say; each order is so very different. Each piece has to be hand crafted. Besides, we at Faunus Enterprises are not allowed to give out lead-time information, it's ..."
Springer: "I know ... 'company policy'."
Voice: "You catch on quick, Sir."
Springer: "Let me see if I've got this correct so far ... you can make me something, it costs 25,000 cr. to start work, but you won't tell me what extra materials I need to supply, or how long an order will take!"
Voice: "That's it, Sir. Well done! Not many traders get this far. Oh, I forgot to mention the initial start-up fee of 50 million cr. and our cancellation policy."
Springer: "Tell me more."
Voice: "A Faunus enterprises ship is only for the master trader, like you, Sir. One can be made available to you for about 50 million cr., but you'll have to find the dockyard yourself because we at Faunus Enterprises are not allowed to give out shipyard information, it's ..."
Springer: "I know ... 'company policy'. Tell me about the cancellation policy."
Voice: "My pleasure. To cancel an order you must issue the order before work ends on the current item, we will then continue to make the one after the one being produced, but not the one after that, unless you forget to add stock to the hold for the extra item; in which case we'll stop work, not tell you your order won't finish, not start a new order and charge our standard 25,000 cr. order change fee. Simple."
Springer: "Thank you, you've been very helpful."
Voice: "So would you like to place an order?"
*Note from operator: at this point the Faunus enterprises HQ was destroyed in a savage attack. When later questioned by galactic police, Mr. Springer was let off with a mild caution after pleading diminished responsibility and unwarranted provocation.*
The
Split Faunus is a typical niche vessel; built for one specific purpose and fulfilling it brilliantly. The ability to simply relocate when access to resources become scarce is a trait easily justifying the close to 50 million credits price tag. It also has the power to re-engineer any weapon and manufacture it to specific instructions - a useful trait which has seen it in the employ of many a military installation.
A particular ability of it is to build weapons for which factories are not available either due to no existence of shipyards selling them or lack of notoriety. Certain missiles, Kyons, and earlier in the game some high end weaponry are items that can only be produced by a Faunus. Note that mods that add addition factories may change this. In some earlier versions of XTM an unavailability of terran weapons and certain shields also gave particular value to the Faunus.
Particularly large weapons and shields (notably BEMP, GPPC and 10GJ shields) require more resources than the Faunus can carry. As the Faunus cannot start without the
full resources for a single production cycle, these are items that cannot be built by a Faunus.

[hide][top]Known Ships of this Type
Typically there will be a single Faunus travelling around the universe. This ship can belong to any of the main races (not pirates, Yaki, Khaak, Xenon or Terran) and will typically have a small to moderate patrol of fighters with sometimes an M6.
Attempts to connect this ship with Extended Comms will give you the option to buy weapons and missiles from the Faunus, including some that cannot be gotten elsewhere.
Because the Faunus is unarmed, is unable to escape, and has a weak escort it is a very popular and easy target for capturing. It is also a favourite target for the Cartel Shield Hacker (Egosoft bonus pack) as it is typically possible to pull over 10m in stolen goods from a single TS full of weapons.
