Help:Reputation and Thanks

This page is a chapter in the book Forums.
Appreciation for hard work is something we all like to receive, and as such, there are a number of ways of showing that appreciation to other users here at TXU.

[top]Thanking in Threads

The simplest way of showing your appreciation for someone is by thanking them within the thread they have posted in. The most common way is to say "thank you" in a post within that thread, perhaps even quoting the point you are thanking them for.

Additionally, the use of the "Thanks" button (this image found at the bottom of every post) allows a user to gain a record of their helpfulness on the site. When you click the button, your name is added to the bottom of the post stating your appreciation for that post. This click also adds to your list of how many times you have thanked others, and also adds to the list of thanked posts the poster has received so far.

[top]The Reputation System

The reputations system is a powerful way of demonstrating your appreciation for someone's work, and adds to (or if you don't like it and think it worth it, removes from) their reputation within TXU. Unlike the Thanks button, this allows a level of respect to build up around a user. To give someone reputation for their post, click the , and a small box will appear. There you can choose to remove or add to their reputation, and can optionally include a comment with it. The comment appears in their Control Panel, but not name is associated with it.

We will not tolerate, however, the abuse of this system to either excessively enhance, or to destroy someone's reputation, nor is it permitted to be offensive or to spam the system. Those who do face infractions or even banning.

When a new user joins TXU, they gain what is called a reputation 'power' of 1, and a default 10 reputation points.

Whenever a user gives reputation ('rep' for short), they give whatever their 'power' is, so by default, that's one reputation point. This reputation 'power' is added to by various factors within the forum. The list is as follows:
  • For every 1 year a person is registered, they gain an extra 1 'power' point.
  • For every 500 posts a person has, they gain an extra 1 'power' point.
  • For every 100 reputation points, they gain an extra 1 'power' point.

This works as follows.

A user has been on TXU for two years (2 extra points), has 1500 posts (3 points), and 200 reputation points of their own (2 extra points). Every time they vote for someone, they give them the standard 1 point, plus the additional 7 have as outlined above. So they give 8 points to the recipient.

Currently users have a daily limit of 10 voting options. In other words, after ten votes, they need to wait a day before they can vote again. (Admins are exempt).

They also can't vote again for the same user within the next 10 votes.
A user has to have at least 5 posts to be able to spend rep.

So in theory, once every two days they can vote again for the person.

If you don´t leave a note with your name in, the receiver will not know who gave him the rep (this can only be seen by Super Moderators and up).

Each 100 Points adds a star to your profile:
= 200 - 299 Points
