Light Fighters, also known as
Scouts, are a cheap, fast, and agile class, and have kept many a pilot alive for another day due to their speed. They have been in existence since the very beginning of space travel, as single-man exploration drones commissioned to find and bring back samples and video feeds of unexplored areas. Once contact with hostile aliens had been established, it was a simple task to upgrade them to carry weapons rather than scientific testing equipment

Light fighters are barely shielded, with only a simple set of weaponry, but when in the hands of an agile pilot, these weapons swiftly stack up damage. The maneuverability of these fighters is also a great boon, as they can dodge most weapons fire and maintain dive bombing runs until the very last second in which they pull away. However, when they are hit, they can withstand only a few seconds of sustained fire.
The shielding on a Light Fighter is very small, and can withstand very little damage before the hull starts taking hits. The theory behind this is that with less machinery, the craft becomes smaller and lighter, requires less propulsion, and can so keep on the tail of enemy ships while dodging incoming fire
Even with the recent developments in technology, the Light Fighter has remained a simple construct, using basic alloys and internal electronics. It's history, though a long one, is relatively uneventful, and follows the simple curve of discovery, upgrade, discovery, upgrade when it comes to materials and manufacturing techniques. Some refer to it as a "pea-shooter". While the true meaning of this phrase has been lost, some historians believe it to be an absurdly primitive method of propelling vegatation, and is most likely an inadequate description of the Light Fighter
Since the Light Fighter is in a constant stage of development, old
M5s are simply upgraded or broken down into component parts for integration into the next generation.
