I've never minded the small ships, it's the low speeds of the big ships I dislike. They have HUGE engines, they should be capable of going 500m/s no problems, but should also take the better part of 10 minutes to get to that speed (and slow down from that speed).
It's a nice concept, too many of the stock ships are a bit "meh". There really isn't as much variety between races as their used to be and with how easy notoriety is you just buy whichever is best in that class (there isnt so much tradeoffs, just good one / bad one).
Not too much point in a tractor drone though because you still can't pull stations any faster than they move at. If you could link 4-5 together and tow faster as a group yes, but that would take some VERY tricky scripting. Mining is too limited by low cargo too unless you plan to use it to just break rocks up and something else collect them
Also note the COST of the items you are talking about adding, that tractor beam is about 800k, that's a 120?k drilling system + a 50k tractor beam for just 100k more?
I'd like maybe an argon TP about the size and a little faster than that mining ship : a real "express"
Perhaps a war drone with two turrets with near 100% coverage and a couple IDs and IREs to be a super war drone (or mine removal)
Perhaps real scout drones that move at high speeds patrolling sectors and drop beacons / temp nav sats near anything they find interesting (with a nice simple beep tone for the pilot to look into the details themselves)
A particular nicity would be a jumpdrive drone. docking space for 1 ship M3-6, jumpdrive, and a generator that supplies it with the power to jump up to 3 sectors. 4-5 of them would be the favourite tool of anyone who caps a lot. low shield, high speed, jump drive and software. *buys one now*. Uses a "deploy" command to unfold into an m5 with dock, and pack command to close back into a drone for picking back up. I'm not sure if that really counts as utility ship though
