may be worth noting that this is a very old thread, and the XTM0.75 (the latest version) comes as a nice simple self extractor. just run it, tell it where your x3 is installed, and click ok

Im using windows 7 and got no problems.
Like Diemetius said, you have to install the XTM as administrator.
It would also be helpful if you provide a bit more information.
- Where do you installed the game?
- Are there any additional mods or scripts running?
I tried under the "natural" location (in this case it was c:\program files (x86)\egosoft\x3) and it gave me the lack of correct files error in game. I am reinstalling to c:\game\x3

OK, I would suggest the following:
- Remove the old installation of x3 in the "program files (x86)" folder.
- Make a brand new installation with all patches and the bonus pack from egosoft
- When you run the XTM-installer, unpack the files to a folder on your desktop.
- Make sure there are no *.cat/*.dat files with same number as in the program folder. If this happens then rename the new *.cat/*.dat files to higher numbers.
- Copy the files from the desktop folder to your X3 folder.
(Some files may be overwritten, thats no problem.)
It is absolutely important that the files are in the right folders. If you got, for example, a t-folder in the main t-folder then something is going wrong.
Thanks- I did a clean install in (c:\games) and now it is running with the new splash screens and the startup message.

/edit: already solved, i was too late.
...and i assume you have the UAC turned on. Installing the game under "Program files" is a very bad idea. This area is handled differently...
You should consider to do the following steps:
-Deinstall everything related to Reunion.
-Check your "Software" if there's no entry anymore
-Install Reunion in a different folder, NOT under program files. For example c:\games\.
-Install the patches and the bonus package
-Download the XTM 0.75 full version
-Install XTM 0.75 full version
-Start a new game and check if everything is ok.
-Install all needed additional scripts, like your cheatscripts and so on.
-Don't use older saved games, always start a new game. XTM is not compatible with savegames from the original game.
-Enjoy XTM

I have been really screwed up by Vista's habit of not allowing programs to modify files.
Run everything "As Adminstrator" and you should be ok.
If you run Plugin Manager and Vista prevents it from writing its CAT/DAT files, confusion prevails. Once I started running that and the game itself "As Adminstrator" things got more sane quickly.
