Well i guess there must be some kind of hardcoded flag so that your (friendly) missiles cannot explode because of impact with friendly objects. (Thus the no trigger missile-missile you are reporting).
If that flag would be removed you couldn't launch missiles as they are spawned inside your launching ship afaik (or yes, you could launch em, but they would explode inside your ship).
So i guess your only choice are Auroras (or manually triggered missiles) - but you cannot fire any other while your aurora is in flight, since the launch command is hooked by the detonator command until then.

with a heavy ship and gazz's racial lasers any sufficiently large ships can convert weapons into heavy varients. 50% faster shots (50% longer ranged)

That's my use as well; clusters and multiple enemies. However, I tend to target ships with turrets intentionally - especially if the target ship is slightly faster than the torpedo. It does work, I assure you. The ideal target is a Xenon P Raider; its turret will take out the torpedo, incidentally taking out its entire raiding party in the process.
Really? So it's a game engine thing? The computer-controlled-launched missiles can hit, but the others can't ...? I guess I should stop trying, then.![]()

Have you tried launching 2 mosquitos? IIRC the Firestorm is a 'hardened' missile and, while an Aurora might take it out (trigger it) in one hit, it might take 2 (or more) mosquitos to do the same?
Also, the mosquito has an effective range just over 6km. Launching your attack from 10km away will be out of range for these missiles.

I have tried launching fifty. None hit. All I get is Betty saying "Mosquito missile self destructed" fifty times.

try it with a distruptor missile, IIRC their range is a lot further and their speed is comparable

Emm, I've got an idea, but I need a bit of assistance here... There are some missiles out there that possess (according to my XTENDED fact sheet) a proximity detonator. Maybe those are the igniters we're looking for, if they indeed do not have to make actual contact with their target and detonate with a sufficient blast radius. Problem is I won't be able to get my hands at my gaming machine till the weekend, so for now that's just a theory. Hurricane missiles come to my mind, but that's dug out of my memory...
Oh and... I tried to fire my torpedoes at turreted targets, but the results were a bit disappointing. Ok, I had some high level prey to say the least: 5 Torpedoes fired, distance between torpedoes a bit over 1000m, target were: Sohnen Seth, Sohnen Zepar, 3 Sohnen Oriax, all of them not triggered and moving in formation at about 100m/s. Results: 2 Oriax and 2 Lilith killed, 2 Torpedoes detonated in proximity of targets, 3 intercepted at a no-harm-done range... not that great a result, and I fired the torpedoes straight into their face, so almost no correction of trajectory was necessary.

There are lists of missiles for XTM on the Wiki, please check it out
I think this topic has gone on for long enough now.
It seems that each player may well have his own ideas and some seem to work whilst others don't, for some users.
Just takes a bit of gaming experiance to know which missile is best to use.

Ooh, can I just add one final thing:
The Mosquito missile defence command also works on other ships; i.e. you can use it on your transports, your battleships, your personal ship, whatever - but only as long as the ship in question has Mosquito missiles in the cargo bay. I have seen this work In-Sector as well as Out-Of-Sector, and it's really cool to see your transport on visual range, firing missiles for defensive purposes... and they hit the incoming missiles.
That's it .. Kalah out.

@Anon loyalist: Sorry if I let this thread drift off topic a bit...
I just want to conclude this with a short summary of today's test run:
I have tried to set off my torpedo with the full range of missiles I could acquire:
(Mosquito, Wasp, Dragonfly, Hornet, Silkworm, Thunderbolt, Disruptor, Tempest, Typhoon, Mantis, Banshee, Rapier, Tornado, Hurricane... )
Result: No guided missile, regardless of detonator kind (direct hit or proximity) and blast radius, was able to set off the Firestorm. This has nothing to do with personal preferences, it simply seems technically impossible.
If it is indeed possible to ignite with an Aurora or other unguided missile I cannot say, as it seems impossible to aim accurately enough to do that stunt...
Finally, all I've come up with is: No chance, go set it off with blaster fire...
Thanks anyway, appreciated the discussion.
Over and out, Mechthart
