      Reviving the concept a little here and after spending a lot of time immersed in XTC, I think maybe even dropping the idea of the Naglfar and Archangel for a pirate Barque (marginally larger than a galleon) would be great to bridge the gap between the carrier and the heavy destroyer. The ship itself would enable pirates to be much more versatile and deadly, since the Galleon already makes for a great command ship, a barque would be fearsome on any front and the Yaki already have themselves an armada in XTC, so they really don't need any more love.

      Furthermore, as I know there are actual pirate factions in XTC such as the Skulls and Sharks, suppose each 'gang' had a barque that served as their flagship or "Mecca" so to speak. The gang would operate out of its M2+ and wage war or repel incursions with it on the field and the only way to severely cripple a pirate fleet would be the takeover or destruction of its barque, in which the player may even earn the respect of rival gangs.

      Rivaling gangs is difficult. Because technically they all share the same race. So if you shoot boron pirates you also lose rep with split pirates. Which is a pitty but it's not possible to do it different.

      Nomadic pirates are cool but i don't think npcs could really give you that feeling. Ramming their great command base-ship into the next asteroid does not really add to the atmosphere
      Regarding nomadic piracy for the player - in XTC there are the mobile stations which could even give you production capability but are still moveable. And the crew mostly is not picky about the food ^^ e.g. i mostly pillaged and robbed in terran and boron terrain mainly and wherever i was, i could just feed them with the stuff i "found" there. And the ships are basically free... for a pirate *g*

      2.0 brings new features, and pirates are not forgotten

      2.0 better get a good head start before Rebirth; XTC is great but I fear I may need to scuttle Tradewinds and move on to a much bigger venue when the latter shows up.

      I apologize for the double post but after a month I think it may be justified, though this is approaching a new thread altogether.

      As all pirates are a single faction, and I know this to be true because in my quest to secure territory from the Boneheads and Salamanders I now find my good friends in Sharks turning up red, would it not be possible to use the same corporation reputation template as seen in Vanilla? If you can gain and lose rep with Plutarch, you could modify the values to represent the consequences of hostile actions on behalf of or against a specific pirate gang (or even sub-factional entity for non-pirate players) and thus maintain separate relations with each entity so that not all pirates become red.

      If the corporation rep feature is too limited for this then what about diversifying the factions themselves by adding more to the list. The XTC team was able to add Aldrin as a faction (though from what I've gathered it still isn't bug-free), so it would stand to reason that unless the game is structured to only permit a specific number of factional entities that the pirates themselves could become independent factions. This would also greatly benefit the lore of the game if the player was able to associate with the Otana Confederacy or the Rogue Axis even if not on a plot-level but at least ship hostility alignment would be affected so it would be possible to 'takeover' one gang's space without harming another.

      Just a thought, as I'll restate the fact that I've never coded on full-scale before so I may be ignorant of its limitations.

      We have plans for something like this for 2.0, using the old corporation system to set up clans. With Rebirth looming though we may not have time and we will be concentrating on stuff that HAS to go into 2.0 before we look at extras.

      In all honesty, I wouldn't worry about Rebirth. For your fanbase it's not really that much competition but I understand your point, and I'd actually love to contribute to the XTC team if possible. Is there an estimated ETA for 2.0 yet or is it still up in the air?

      Interest in the mod will drop when rebirth comes out, no getting away from that fact really. As modders we do what we do for ourselves primarily, but that does not mean we don't want to share what we have done with the largest audience we can. By focussing on what really matters for 2.0 first, we make sure that we are getting the maximum amount of our work out to the public before some of them drift off to greener pastures.

      The only thing we are short of, and always have been, is MD scripters. If you have any skill in that area then you are welcome to help out. Unfortunately with us being on a definite time limit now, we currently haven't the time to train up someone who has not used the MD before.

      We have pencilled in a rough ETA of Oct 1st as this is the first day of the 4th quarter. Rebirth is currently stated as having a release date of early Q4 2011. Without a more definite date from ES we cannot fine tune our time limit either.

      Cool. Well, unfortunately, my work in scripting is extremely limited. I prefer to work in the literal media and I spend a lot of time with 2D visuals, but I do hope that XTC achieves its goals in due time. Wish the team good luck for me.
