Is this the mission over in Family Z'rt sector where you're looking for terraformer parts?
I'm in one of the earlier story missions called "the rescue >> Infiltration" or something like that. I'm suppose to kill one ship, then scan some potential smugglers. I killed the target ship, as soon as I did, two or three pirate ships attacked me. It effectively told me to scan the other pirates, so I scanned the pirates attacking me with my freight scanner, then took them out.
The mission briefing says 0 smugglers left, but it still says to scan other ships. There's no direction at all, and I've pretty much paroled the entire sector. I did find one freighter that attacked me and the police, so I took that one down, but I don't think it has anything to do with the mission. I can't remember exactly what the mission briefing says, so I'll start up the game, then edit that in.
EDIT: it says in orange "scan: Potential smugglers", below that in white it says "Destroy: smugglers 0 left"

You can run, but you'll just die tired.
No, the mission Title is Terran Conflict >> The Rescue >> Infiltration. It's very early in the game, and I'm suppose to kill one guy who's name I can't remember, then kill some pirates. It say's I'm suppose to do some work for the Teladi.
the smugglers scatter prety quickly try turning on the mission assistance thing i cant remeber what its called, it will put yellow brackets around the targets even if they are on the other side of the sector or even gone out of the sector , if that dont work it may be the curse of ego and you may need to do the mission again . im afraid with ego you need to save often before missions as they seem to be prone to going wrong. if you are careful try to get one of the smugglers to bail their ship may come in handy to continue the plot

You're looking for 3 freighters, which are usually found near the West gate. Once you get in scanner range they should appear at the top of the list in your sector map. They won't be Pirate race until you scan them.

Ok, I got it. Apparently, I'm suppose to buy a police licence before scanning them. I basically roamed around the sector scanning the ships that would appear directly under mine on the map. Took about 10 minutes. Very tedious mission though.
