Piracy Questions

I'm relatively new to the X universe but is it possible to have AI wingmen / wings to accompany you? I know you can construct bases but besides a carrier can you do it with a smaller ship? How do you recruit them? Basically I want to create a small pirate base off the grid and raid the surrounding systems. I know without cheats it will take a while but is any of this possible? And yes I want to be the Turanic Raiders of the X universe.

As for piracy keep in mind that in the beggining keep at least 1 or 2 races as your friends, so you can buy stations from them and hire TLs and such if you don't want to invest in TL in the beggining.
Later you can keep just 1 race friends (Teladi are always a safe bet, they are very pirate friendly and don't mind buying your weed) or sever all connections with all races if you are all setup for combat.

i know that but someone who is new to piracy could sever the ties to the races more slowly and not go on a full scale assault from the beggining

I know, I'm just lightening the mood.

Unfortunately Vanilla doesn't offer much to the pirate, even with PG3 and YA2, so even I'm holding out til XTC 2.0 before I actually pursue the career wholly again, but alas I digress.
