      Default Promo Shots topic MKII

      Under New management
      Consult me (Syklon) for current needs for shots, I\'ll try and post any needs occasionally once I figure out what all we have.

      Bad shots have problems with these:

      -Lack of detail
      (not enough focus, too much border space left unused and/or Automatic Quality control left ON so turrets render not in full detail, can also be a resolution problem (needs to be 1280x1024 minimal with AA/AF on x4 and all shaders to max glow on, AQC off))

      -Lack of reflection in textures/lack of depth because of it
      (wrong angles of shot against the lighting of the sector used for the shot mostly)

      -Uninteresting pose
      (can either be a dead-pose, meaning no movement is suggested, the ship just \"hanging\" dead or the camera is too much in allignment with the ship horizon, creating a still-shot as well).

      -Background clashes
      (meaning a ship melts too much away against a roid or a planet, deforming the shape or distracting the eye)

      -Dead Background or Background out of focus
      (meaning focus on the ship is not in-line with background, causing for a dead-effect or dull picture, this mainly happens when shooting ships at extended focus(zoom) against dark backgrounds with no objects of reference in them but a few tiny star blips.).

      -Wrong angle of object
      (The ship is captured either too much from it\'s below or aft, no bridge visible, not enough distinctive shape to let the eye make out whats front-aft etc.)

      Important to remember:

      -1600x1200 or more, shaders max, AA/AFx4, glow ON
      -AQC OFF
      -Some sectors have high resolution backgrounds, some lower.

      Get a good angle on the ship so that light reflects off the ship and there is a planet, roid, station, nebula, etc. in the background. Get close as possible to the ship, then use the video enhancement goggles to zoom in so it fills the screen (do not use the zoom too much or it will blur the background though). Take as many shots from differant angles as possible that meet the above angle requirements. Overlapping the ship with part of a planet/roid looks good

      To help find a good angle best thing you can do is fly in your ship toward the target ship, stop a distance away. Select the monitor of the ship you\'ve got in target, rotate it until you get the glint off it that tells you it is reflecting some light. Then you can rotate your ship, zoom in, etc to get it lined up well.

      -Black sectors with empty space are a no go
      -Thick foggy sectors are a no-go (if you can see the entire ship clearly and the background object go for it, otherwise get closer or relocate)
      -Black sectors with only a tiny light source are a no-go
      -Try to avoid gates (alright if no choice but better without)
      -Put your mouse off-screen (can be fixed if not, but better to do it w/o)

      -Never shoot everything in the same sector
      -No more then 1 angle+sector per shot per ship will be used, take a couple if you want to try small variations though, then submit the best one, never repeat the same thing twice.

      -Put fraps on auto-shoot with 1 second interval (or get ready with your print screen key)
      -Hud OFF (shift+H)
      -No nose of ship > busters and such will do best.
      -Video enhancement goggles are essential.

      -For every good shot it\'s nothing out of the ordinary to have 20-30 mediocre shots.

      Good sectors:
      Blue Profit - I think
      Spaceweed Drift
      Montalaar - White light
      Duke\'s Domain- red light-red mist
      Friar\'s Retreat- white light-wight/blue planet-red nebula
      Barren Shores
      Duke\'s Vision
      Aladna Hill - White light-blue planet
      Scale Plate Green - White light - I think
      Rhy\'s Crusade - Blue or white light-red planet
      Home of Light
      Presidents End- red light-red mist-lots of moons
      Unholy Descent- red light-red planet
      [s]Getsu Fune-blue- blue mist[/s]
      Unknown Sector NW of Getsu- white light
      Bluish Snout- white/blue light-yellow planet
      Black Hole Sun- red light-blue planet
      Brenan\'s Triumph- red planet

      Things that I can fix in PS
      Too dark
      Mouse visible
      Funny color
      etc.

      Things I can\'t fix:
      Poor angle
      Low Resolution/Graphics
      Too small (cropping lowers the quality too much, sorry)
      No/fuzzy background

      New shots can be posted in this thread or sent to me at syklon413@hotmail.com if you don\'t want to get a photobucket, image shack, etc. If you don\'t know how to edit your photos don\'t worry I can do them for you.

      Concerning action shots:
      For now low priority, go test the mod instead, will post otherwise when this changes.
      If you are testing and there is a battle and it is on all the highest graphics feel free to take shots.
      Try and focus your shots close up on only one ship with weapons fire preferably flying past you, and get try to get all the previous criteria for standard shots as well (difficult, I know). All action shots must use the EWFX mod

      If you want photoshop:
      Look for Total Uninstall 3 on the web. (worth buying but it does have 30 days free). Then install PS free 30 day trial from the Adobe website using TU3. If you do buy TU3 you can legitimately install, uninstall free of charge indefinitely. Though of course I never told you.

      For a video you could just run the game at a much lower resolution, the final result would be fine at 640x480, trying to get Fraps to record 25+ fps at maximum resolution with maximum X3 graphics settings would be difficult unless you happen to have an amazing PC :P

      It would be nice to add an Xtended video to the game intro though

      Can you add a video to the lead in? and can we make it so it
      1. overwrites the X3 one (lame anyway)
      2. isn\'t skipped first time you press esc? as otherwise I would skip it without noticing, would be better if you have to press it twice.

      Videos are in the future of this thread (new thing to learn, great! :P), but at current we are trying to focus on getting enough good screenshots of all the ships, then we\'ll move on to the next things.

      edit: Just a thought, but could someone come up with a script to destroy all ships, stations etc. that are not player owned so that we could get good videos w/o killing our comp?

      Here is a quick attempt at some good shots of the cerberus. Fully kitted and even one decent action shot with HUD up against a Xenon patrol including a P, some Ls and some Ms. (There would have been more but my buster hanging about snapping pics was an easy target for the P, who took a lucky PPC shot at me while dodging fire from \"Judgement Come\".

      Good comments erased, criticisms of some shortened and left as examples for future referance

      Keep up the good work y\'all! Will hopefully release the new public screenshot page before I go out of town this weekend
