      Default Sectors names

Here are the BSG 2003 RDM 12 Colonies with descriptions.

Red text = official name Green Text = suggested name

      Aquaria,
Aquaria is located at the outer edge of Colonial space and over half its surface is made up of water. The world itself was initially dependant on the produce of its large oceans, but the discovery of massive Tylium deposits beneath its surface and oceans created an industrial revolution which doubled the population within thirty years. In fact, Tylium exports created so much wealth that the capital city ‘Trikon’ saw development on a massive scale and sadly became a polluted industrial city. Consequently, environmental issues are a regular debate in the governing Aquarian Assembly.

      Aerelon,
The Aerelon colony was founded by Ares the Sixth Lord of Kobol. The planet Aerelon is accompanied by three moons which exert considerable tidal forces on the planet. The presence of the larger moon ‘Tisiphone’ even influences the tectonic activity of the planet, making it the most volcanically active throughout the colonies. Aerelon, due to its volcanic ranges has the lowest concentration of oxygen of all the Colonial worlds, and consequently the Aereans have adapted well to the physical demands of this harsher climate. This has given Aerelon population an advantage at the Colonial Games, were they have produced a good number of Golden Laureates. Aerelon is also the home of the marine Headquarters and 'Fort Aspiring' the premier War College.

      Canceron,
Though Canceron is very similar to Caprica, the planet is blessed with soil which is three times as fertile as its Colonial cousins. The surface of its fourteen continents are characterised by large grassland planes with only one significant forest on the continent of Ileuses. Agronomy has developed to such a degree that Canceron succeeds in producing four times the amount of produce required for its own domestic consumption, and other colonies, notably Tauron, depend on Canceron for its food supply. The capital Elysian is very un-cosmopolitan and reflects the humble nature of its people. The Cancerons, due to their pastoral lifestyle are more religious and conservative than some of the other colonies, but are generally a warm and welcoming people.

      Caprica,
Caprica was the first colony to be established after the exodus from Kobol, and it quickly developed into an economic and military super power. Caprican society has developed into a peaceful but yet sophisticated civilisation that rarely used their dominance to exert control on the other Colonies. From the outset, Caprica developed an early form of democratic governance which was then widely imitated by the other Colonies. Caprican scholars encouraged the planetary government to engage all of the colonies fairly and to unify in the ‘Articles of Colonisation’ act. As a result of Caprica’s efforts, the colonies decided that Caprica City should be the seat of power for all three branches of the Colonial Government and thus become the capital city. Other major cities on Caprica include Delphi which hosts Caprica’s largest spaceport as well as the Colonial Museum which houses the Colonial history archive.

      Gemenon,
Gemenon was initially established with a flourishing industrial economy which processed the extensive resources and mineral deposits found on its surface. But, due to the enormity of nearby Tauron’s industrial growth, the Gemenon economy stuttered into an arduous depression. In these difficult times the people of Gemenon became deeply religious and certain sects became immersed in the translation of the ancient scrolls. These religious groups became very rich and began to exercise political control over the population. With heavy industry relocated to Tauron, the Gemenon government embarked on a policy of reform and began to re-invent the planetary capital ‘Covenant’ as a financial centre. Favourable taxation policies saw intense commercial activity and large numbers of multi-colonial corporations, exchanges, and even the Colonial Reserve Bank set up their headquarters in Covenant‘s prosperous financial district.

      Leonis,
Leonis was established by Artemis, the Fourth Lord of Kobol. The planet itself is largely undeveloped, and is covered with vast forests and exotic fauna which is a direct consequence of the planet's environmental policies. The major human cities are only located on the East side of the ‘Silver’ continent where deforestation for industrial purposes is outlawed. Leonis has a modestly sized population, but during peak vacation periods the population swells with tourists and other immigrant labour. The capital Lunos provides the focus point of this successful tourist industry, from which Leonis depends for two-thirds of its domestic product.

      Libran,
Libran is a small and arid world which is sparsely populated due to its close orbit of its Sun. Libran is famous throughout the twelve Colonies for the ‘Sanctuary of Apollo’ which is located some twenty kilometres from Lysandion, the planetary capital. The Sanctuary was originally established by Priests, who belonged to a religious cult called the ‘Order of Apollo’. Members of the Order were enlightened, and wished to query the wonders and mysteries of the Universe. Over time, the Sanctuary developed into an advanced scientific research institution and its status as academic centre surpassed all others. Patents for advanced technologies provide a stable income for the local economy.

      Picon,
The planet Picon developed from its initial agrarian society to be an important trading partner in the Colonies. Due to the success of its economy, Pirates grew to be an increasing threat to the trading routes, consequently, the Pisceans responded in creating a naval fleet second only in strength to Caprica. The Pisceans military might was very apparent after successfully invading and occupying Sagittarion in 37 BU. Sagittarion's occupation eventually ended as a goodwill gesture before signing the 'Articles of Colonisation'. As a recoginition of their actions, Picon became the home for the Colonial Fleet Headquarters and its required industries.

      Sagittaron,
The people of Sagittarion have endured centuries of resentment from the other Colonies. Sagittarion’s woe began as large Pirate settlements formed on its western continent who; unregulated by the Sagittarion authorities, profited from attacking the lucrative trading routes that passed through its vicinity. This continual threat enraged many, and Picon reacted firmly and ordered the occupied of Sagittarion in order to rid the planet of its currupt government and criminal network. This heavy handed approach by the Pisceans simply nurtured hate and resentment from the indigenous population. Ever since freedom was eventually restored, insurrectionists have continued to terrorise the planetary government to secede from the ‘Articles of Colonisation’.

      Scorpia,
The Scorpians are devoutly religious and consider themselves more ‘pure’ than the Gemenon faith which involves itself too much in commerce. The first settlement of ‘Provenance’ saw the construction of the ‘High Temple’, and it served as the planetary capital until 200 BU. In order to distance religion from its growing commercial activities, the Scorpians moved the capital to the city of ‘Heraklion’. Provenance has become a pilgrimage and has served the Colonies as an eccelestial shrine ever since. With many large asteroids based in this system, the Colonial Fleet decided to hide their largest shipyard so the fleet could go unobserved from prying eyes.

      Tauron,
Tauron is located close to its trading partners of Gemenon and Caprica. Tauron’s has developed huge industrial complexes across it two main continents of Eurynome and Thetis. Tauron’s industrial dominance is mainly due to its shipyards which have produced masses of civilian ships capable of Ftl travel which established the earliest trading routes. Due to industrial greed, Tauron developed many automated systems that eventually developed into the first robotic humanoids called Cylons. During the first ‘Cylon war’, Tauron unfortunately became an important strategic battlefield. Many industrial cities like ‘Hephaestion’ were occupied and used by the Cylon’s to produce ships, weapons, and more sinisterly... its own Cylon army.

      Virgon.
Virgon was the last planet to be colonised and it followed the norms of depending on Agronomy and light industry for its initial development. Virgon’s population is spread across numerous islands with its capital ‘Devotion’ based on the largest and central continent called Kypris. For the more advanced Gemonese economy, Virgon was seen as an underdeveloped investment opportunity, and lucrative trading routes were established between Colonies. Gemenon exploited the low labour costs but improved the industrial infrastructure, and Virgon gradually saw its economy became vibrant and successful. Tourism has developed as industry, with the rich from other Colonies purchasing land and residential areas along the beautiful coastlines of its tropical islands. Virgon is considered to be the most cosmopolitan of all colonies.

Other systems/planets mentioned in the mini series:

      Cimtar
Cimtar is widely recognized as one of the sectors that forms the Colonial boundary known as the Armistice line. After the Cylon war, it was agreed that Cylons would leave recognized Colonial space and if needed would establish diplomatic relations in this sector. For this purpose, the Colonial Government built the 'Armistice Station' which could be used to host any needed conference between the races.

      Ragnar
The planet Ragnar is a gas giant whose upper atmosphere is wracked with violent electromagnetic and storms. These storms interfere with a number of electrical systems and make it impossible for Dradis to scan for ships. During the Cylon conflict, the Colonial Fleet became aware that the gaseous atmosphere also emits radiation that affects Cylon’s physiology, and thus Ragnar became a useful place to hide ships from Cylon patrols. During the decades after the war the Colonial Fleet established a hidden supply outpost called the ‘Ragnar Anchorage’ so its Battlestar groups could remain on duty for longer periods of time.

      Trevor Moon - deleted scene
'Trevor Moon' is an area of Colonial space that is prohibited and used only by the Colonial Fleet. Located between Caprica and Picon, Trevor Moon has been used as a training range and is littered with military debris. All graduates of Picon's Colonial War Academy have been required to complete their basic and advanced training at this hostile and challenging sector of space.

Troy - Boomer's parents died here
The abandoned mining settlement of Troy was originally established and run by the Aereans. Troy was a prosperous Tylium mining outpost until a major catastrophe killed a vast number of the settlers. The cause of this cataclysm remains a mystery, but the 'Aerelon Gazette' continues to suggest that foul play was evident.

      Series 1

      Prolmar - EP 1 - '33'
The Prolmar sector remains largely unchartered space. Though the Colonial Fleet and mining companies have instigated explorations in the region, it was feared that it was too far from the 'Red Line' for safe and accurate jump calculations. Colonial losses from exploration missions remain a mystery.

      Sector O2h - EP 2 - 'Water'
This sector contains a number of planets with several orbiting moons. Exploratory searches have identified the moon nicknamed ‘Arcta’ as a possible source of water. Due to the extreme climate, water is only available on this frozen planet as ice, and will need to be mined.

Pathia - EP 5 - 'Act of contrition'
Pathia is lone gas giant that orbits its Sun with only a small red coloured moon as company. It is quite probable that this system contained many more planets which were drawn in and destroyed by Pathia’s gravitational pull. The unhabitable moon, though containing a thin atmosphere, is a dusty and hostile satellite that might once have been a planet in its own right.

Cyrannus Asteroid Belt - EP 10 - 'The hand of God' - attack of Cylon Tylium refinery
Initial analysis of the asteroids located in this vast sector suggest the availability of large quantities of Tylium and metallic ores. Caution is advised, since that this sector borders established Cylon territories, and may now be under Cylon control.

Sector 728 - EP 12 - 'Kobol's last gleaming' - mentioned as the location of Kobol

      Kobol - EP 12/13 - 'Kobol's Last Gleaming I & II'
Kobol is the birthplace and original home world of the human race. Humanity found it necessary to abandon Kobol after suffering a massive ecological disaster. The planetary capital ‘ City of the Gods’ resided in the northen hemisphere and its beautiful and imposing buildings like the Forum, Opera House and Temple were later duplicated in the city of Delphi on Caprica. It is written in the sacred scrolls that Athena’s tomb on Kobol may contain details regarding the location of a thirteenth colony called Earth, a planet regarded as a myth by many.

      Series 2

Lagoon Nebula 'EP 6 - Home part II' - mentioned during the episode
The beautiful Lagoon Nebula is a system which is located far from known Colonial space. It is known from the Scriptures that the Lagoon Nebula can be used a reference point in order to locate the lost thirteenth colony called Earth. Whether this system warrants any exploration has been debated regularly and so far dismissed.

      Sector 259 - EP 15 'Scar'
Named after the God of ‘Death’, the Thanatos asteroid belt appears to be a dark and dangerous system which contains a rich vein of Tylium deposits. Unfortunatley debris and rumored Cylon patrols makes this system difficult for the large mining ships to operate in safely. Proceed with care.

      Cygnus X-1 - EP 17 - 'The Captain’s hand' – Cylon ambush of Pegasus
Initial scans confirm that the Cygnus X-1 sector contains a Binary star system. The larger Sun remains active while the smaller dwarf star is in decline and emits large levels of gamma and x-rays. It is advised that caution should be taken in this sector, because of the scale of these emissions could interfere with Dradis and communication equipment.

      New Caprica - EP 19 & 20 - 'Lay down your burdens I & II'
New Caprica is a unhabitated planet that is hidden inside a dense nebula which makes the planet undetectable. Ground surveys confirm that the world is colder than the original Colonies, but appears to be able to support life in the warmer equatorial region. Scientific investigations reveal that New Caprica could be suitable for long term colonisation.

Series 3 - Spoilers will be removed on showing of Series 4
      [spoiler:dbc37fd56d]
      Lion’s Head Nebula - EP 06 & 07 - ‘Torn’ + ‘A measure of salvation’
The Lion’s Head Nebula is referred to in the scrolls of ‘Pythia’ as a navigational beacon for those who seek Earth. The scriptures declare "And the caravan of the heavens was watched over by a great lion with a mighty blinking eye." According to leading astronomers at Libran’s ‘Sanctuary of Apollo’, the ‘blinking eye’ is created by a system of red and blue pulsars. Whether the Nebula emits radiation that intereferes with Dradis or communication systems is yet unknown.

      NCD2539 - EP 07 - 'A measure of salvation’
NCD2539 has been confirmed as a sector used as a supply route for Cylons. The sector is continually patrolled and is heavily defended by a number of resident Basetars.

Straits of Madagon - EP 10 ‘Passage’
The massive Madagan system includes a huge star cluster that emits masses of deadly gamma radiation. Reports from scouting missions indicate that there might be a possible route through the system to a planet with food and other resources. Further research has confirmed that ships without proper shielding will be effected by the hazardous levels of radiation, and ship navigation systems will temporarily fail. Careful navigation is essential for those who wish to travel through this perilous sector.

Caelestis - EP 10/11 -‘Passage’ & ‘Eye of Jupiter’
This habitable planet is surrounded by a debris ring, thought to be the remains of a disintegrated moon or asteroid. Seas and oceans cover a significant proportion of this world, which helps to create a biosphere suitable for producing huge quantities of a protein rich algae. It has been long recognised as myth that a planet temporarily used by humans on the way to Earth may be the location of a shrine called the ‘Temple of Five’. This shrine may contain an artifact known as the ‘Eye of Jupiter’ which is required in order to locate Earth. Whether the temple is located on Caelestis remains to be seen. [/spoiler:dbc37fd56d]

Mox, would you like me to keep my initial reply (above) updated with references available to all planets/systems encountered in the New BSG series? (once you reply I'll continue to gather further info from different sites.

Would you also like me to discard the references to the Original series?

I can't be too specific, as this is Mox's department, but keeping the post up to date, perhaps leaving both old and new series info there for now.

We can always discard one or the other later if we need to. I would imagine that the new series is mainly what Mox will want to work from though.

Anyone want to write some sector descriptions for the 12 colonies?

At the moment all I have written are:

      Sagittaron:
Before the war Sagittaron was seen as a neglected and disenfranchised member of the colonies.

      Gemenon:
The people of Gemenon are deeply religious and believe in the literal translation of the scriptures.

      Ragnar:
Ragnar is a gas giant whose atmosphere is wrecked with storms. Ragnar anchorage is a Colonial supply outpost built within an area of calm within the atmosphere.

      Kobol:
Kobol is the birthplace and original home of humanity, from which the civilization departed and formed the Twelve Colonies of Man on other worlds. According to legend, there was also a thirteenth "lost" colony, who settled on the planet Earth, the location of which remained a mystery to the populations of the other twelve.

So theres atleast 10 colonies that need something writing about them, and 2 that need abit more doing to theirs too!

TOS Planets (Some text quoted from website)

The original series was developed with an open-ended approach to the universe. The series' pilot, "Saga of a Star World", introduced a non-human species inhabiting the world Carillon. These ant-like creatures (called Ovions) fed on human beings, but were also enslaved by the Cylons. Even though Carillon was destroyed, the viewing audience was immediately engaged by the idea that inhuman characters (other than the Cylons) would be a mainstay of the series. Alas! It was not to be.

In "The Lost Planet of the Gods", the Galactica's fleet passed through a magnetic void, at the center of which, or on the far side of which, they discovered the lost world of Kobol. Once hospitable to human life, it was apparently unsuitable for recolonization. And, besides, the Cylons tracked the rag-tag fleet to Kobol and presumably destroyed whatever remnants of the ancient human civilization still existed.

Next comes the ice moon or planet (they seemed to use "moon" and "planet" interchangeably) Arcta, where an immense laser gun threatens the fleet. The story was taken from the movies "The Guns of Navarone" and "The Dirty Dozen" ("The Devil's Brigade" might have influenced it, too) and it has been lambasted and criticized by fans for years. The ice world served as the remote outpost of a reclusive scientist, Dr. Ravashol, who found time to breed clones as well as design horrific weapons of mass destruction.

In "The Magnificent Warriors", the Galactica bartered for food with non-human aliens (!) on the planet Sectar (supposedly located in a region with numerous farming worlds -- see Sidebar). The aliens were goofy, the local humans were goofy, the planet was goofy, and one can only hope the Cylons stumbled across it and blew it out of the sky by accident if not by intent.

The planet Attila (see Sidebar) is probably the best imagined of all the secondary colonies portrayed in the original series. That is because it leaves a great deal to the imagination. The only real sign of civilization is the family's castle. But one has to wonder why so many farming worlds and reclusive planets exist. Was life in the Twelve Colonies as bad as all that? One of the best worlds in the original Battlestar Galactica series was Attila, a primitive, feudal world overrun by the Cylons. Its people, or at least their leaders, lived in castles and rode Unicorn-like creatures. They were nonetheless aware of the space-faring civilizations and must have been descended from reactionary ex-patriots of the Twelve Colonies. Obviously intended to evoke images of fairy-tales and northern epics of heroics and derring-do, Attila proved that the Cylons were only effective when they got the drop on their enemies. Had it not been for Count Baltar's treachery (and the gullibility of the Council of Twelve), the Galactica and one other Battlestar could probably have cleaned up the entire ambush force. Attila's people were mostly wiped out, but at least one family survived, and that was pretty much all it took.

Well, "The Long Patrol" introduced us to the prison colony on Proteus, an asteroid or small moon or world in the Frodian Galaxy (apparently distinct from the Kobol galaxy). Some or all of the prisoners were descended from Colonials from the planet Aries.

Gamorray, like Carillon, was home to another race of beings; in this case, the Delphians. The Cylons are said to have wiped them out as soon as they achieved space travel. In the two-part episode "The Living Legend", Commander Cain of the Battlestar Pegasus has been conducting raids on the Cylon base at Gamorray for at least two years. He persuades a reluctant Adama to try to take out the base for strategic reasons. The Cylons are using it as a sectar capitol, which implies that the Cylon Alliance must have controlled an immense amount of territory before it destroyed the Twelve Colonies.

Paradeen marks the outer boundary of the region of influence of Terra (not to be confused with Earth, even though Terra -- the Latin name for Earth -- is often used as a name for Earth in science fiction). Paradeen is a small moon which has been colonized by Terra's western coalition, a peaceful, democratic society. But the Eastern Alliance has wiped out Terra's population and the populations of other colonies (many of which are called Lunar One, Lunar Seven, etc.).

Terra is an interesting world. While it has a space-faring civilization capable of traveling between the stars (and thus is far more advanced than Earth), its technology is not comparable to that of the Twelve Colonies. The audience is left with the impression that Terra was founded by the Thirteenth Tribe, but is not the primary home (because Earth is the primary home) of the Thirteenth Tribe.

Terra is the last civilized world encountered by the Galactica and her fleet in the original series. The audience is not told whether the Cylons know about Terra or will destroy it. Presumably, the Ship of Lights will look out for Terra, since they went to the trouble to use Apollo to persuade the Terrans to calm down and discuss peace with each other.

Found information about the Colonies here (part of an Rpg though)
