X-Tended - Terran Conflict News. 22nd January 2010

It has been far too long since the last news. The first announcement in the new year is a great opportunity for us to look back at what has been accomplished by the team in the past year and to slip in some new stuff which we haven't told you about before. Of course we cannot tell you everything but this announcement will be a long one so let's get started.

First off, 2009 has been a busy year. We have finished a number of parts which the final modification will be built up from and are progressing fast with many more - but it is not only the game that has undergone many changes, our team has done so as well. This is why we would like to list our new team members before the main content of this announcement begins.

Dragon Dream - General Modding
Jens Ka - Mission Director Scripting
spacefueladdict - Sector Design/General Modding
Killjaeden - Modeller
u24j7x5 - Mission Director Scripting

Now on with the actual news. We have already released information about some of our features, examples being a completely new map with over 190 sectors neatly integrated into the lore of the X-universe, a custom difficulty system allowing players to adjust various difficulty settings on the fly, completely reworked weapons about which you will be informed more later in this announcement, and a new factory size (XXL) which enables you to build complexes with higher productivity while using less factories, thus resulting in a performance gain. Those are just a few of the features that will be in the final mod, and in this announcement we will inform you of a few more of those features.

Let's begin with the foundations of the mod. One of the main reasons why the development of X-Tended - Terran Conflict takes quite a while is because we approached the modification with a different mentality than with the original X-Tended Mod. We didn't limit ourselves to expanding the game (although this is of course still a major part of the mod), but decided early on to rework the very base structures of the game. An example for this would be that we didn't just add new weapons - we reworked the whole weapon system and implemented a new structure into it - the result is that we were able to neatly integrate 31 new weapons into the game, raising the amount of weapons to 61 in total.

TShips has received a similar treatment and so has TShields, resulting in the addition of military shields for each shield type. As you may have guessed a number of further basic files have undergone and are undergoing reworks. These basic structure changes provide us with more possibilities in balancing and introducing more variety into the game, which in the end will result in the game being more enjoyable for the player.

There have been further changes to the game which cover a different area but are just as basic. A good example of this is the custom difficulty system mentioned in previous announcements. This pulls together a number of different background systems into a simple to use menu, which allows the player to change some of the very basic behaviours in the game depending on the difficulty level specified. One example of this is the XTC bailing system, which will (in combination with the difficulty system) allow the player to specify the bailing chance for different ship types in percentages. The custom difficulty system also uses new equipment libraries designed and built by the team which will equip NPC ships with different load-outs based on the difficulty specified, the race of the ship, and the class (size) of the ship.

Of course scripting work is not limited to the custom difficulty system alone. Some of you may remember the Goner Mobile Shipyard (GMSY) from the original X-Tended Mod, while most will know it under its Terran Conflict name - "Aran" (the ship that can be found in the unfocussed jump drive sectors). In XTM, it had the ability to build ships much like the player HQ, and this will again be possible in XTC; But we didn't stop at that. Of course the Aran is a possibility for the player to build ships and thus an alternative to the HQ, but a Mobile Shipyard is very special and will be limited - so we took it a step further. In order to increase your ship production, you will be able to obtain your own shipyards!

Another area we decided to tackle was the property menu. As the property menu is quite messy and unintuitive to use, XTC will feature a new, powerful tool for empire management as an alternative to the property menu.

There are a number of further features on the script editor side which we would like to mention, but we have managed to restrain ourselves and we will cover them in later news posts.

With two new mission director coders joining the team, you are probably asking yourself "What is going on on the MD side?". "A lot." is the answer. For XTC, all generic missions have been adjusted and rebalanced. This was achieved by attacking the MD with the same mentality as described before: Changing the base structures. The MD also has basic libraries (like the 'Opponent Balancing System' library, or OBS for short) and these have been adjusted and partially rewritten for XTC, providing us with far more control over the system than would have been possible had we used the default structures provided to us in TC. Of course this is not everything that is happening in this area, XTC will also feature a number of new generic missions introducing some more variety into the game. Also as no vanilla plots will be available we are working on our own plot which will serve as an introduction into the setting of the modification. More about this later.

A major part of any of the larger mods is the visuals; It was the case with XTM, and it will be the case with XTC also. The Terran Conflict forum has seen a number of modifications improving and changing the visual quality of the universe before. Some eliminated the 'sector fog', some increased the viewing distance, others concentrated on sector backgrounds creating them from telescope pictures, and some even painted their own backgrounds. Not wanting to buck the trend, XTC will feature a number of completely new backgrounds with the same, if not better, quality than the original ones.

Of course improvements to the map weren't limited to that, as you may have noticed from the screens released so far planets have also received various visual improvements.

Another large part of most major mods are the ships. The X-Tended Mod introduced 95 new ships for X3: Reunion. Some of these were included in X3: Terran Conflict when the original X-Tended Team joined with Egosoft to work on the new game. As the successors to the X-Tended Mod, we have access to all of the XTM ships which were not included in TC and all of them will be in X-Tended - Terran Conflict.

Many of the XTM veterans will remember the mighty M0 class: The Argon Leviathan, the Paranid Olympos, the Terran Valhalla, the OTAS Castrum, and the Sohnen Incubus. You will encounter the M0 class ships again in XTC, although they will not be as strong in order to maintain balancing. Now the XTM M0's are not anything new to all our veterans, so here is something to whet their appetites: The Split now have their own M0 - the Taipan.

Work on our OST is progressing well. We already have a number of new soundtracks finished and more are work in progress. Another part of the work in the sound area is sound effects, which includes weapon and explosion sounds. Those 31 new weapons need new sounds, and so there's a lot of work to do here as well.

Finally it is time to introduce you a little more to the setting of the modification. One of the - if not the - main principle of XTM was that everything which was added had to fit into the existing lore of the X-universe, the same is true for XTC - There will be no dimensional rifts opening up gateways to the Star Wars or Star Gate universes in X-Tended - Terran Conflict. A lot of time has been invested in creating a new scenario for this modification which allows for a new map and can still be integrated into the lore known from previous games and books. In brief, XTC is set after the events of Terran Conflict and the Aldrin Expansion Missions. The mod takes up the story thread left by the end of TC's main plot: Aldrin has been re-discovered and connected to the universe by a pair of terran gates. In XTC this process has continued, using Aldrin as a jumping off point, old gates have been found and re-activated within the old gate network. XTC begins three years after Aldrin has been re-discovered, and in these few years the situation has changed completely. Whether that is for the better or for the worse you will learn about in due course.

Excellent news there -AS- (and the :xtcflag: team), well done!

Love the look of the statistics menu and user balance interface.
And good to see all the old favourites return
Like the look of the Split M0, sorta like a bloated Elephant. But where's the Boron M0 :? (they are pacifists but a station specific / homebase type M0 that wasn't very armed, say on the goner M0 end of the Spectrum rather than the Valhalla combat end, would fit their genre)

Lovely pics too :smitten:

It has always been the one and only valhalla.

The egosoft model was just a horrible jumpgate accident.

Took me a while to see the spit M0, i just thought one of the pythons was a bit closer to the camera then the others. ;-)

That's because, even being M.A.S.S.I.V.E. (and you'll comprove that in game...) it still maintains the sleek line of every Split ship, thank to our modellers, who studied engineering in Family Z'krt High S'kll ;)

Yup, the models are already in, and iirc the scripts are also written with tweaks to make them more user friendly.

Will they work similarly to Logan Abler's Scripts (from the ego forums)? They allow you to take resources from a central pool and distribute them to the ships. Or do we have to stock the ships ourselves?

just noticed....in the pic with the firing Teladi Falcon:those energy pulses look like the drones from Stargate Atlantis(for those who saw this great series)verry cool indeed:lol:.And also i see that you made new cannon desings for fighters. Also verry nice addition.

Anyway.

I like verry much the ideea of NEW.Since 6 years ago when i was just 11 years old,and was introduced to the great story of the X-Universe with X2,i allways wanted that somehow the game to renew:rolleyes:.

Of course new sector additions by X3 and TC ,as well as the new grapichs engine, and a lot more, made it a chalege again but not the same feeling like i firstly felt when i discovered the magic of X.And now ,hearing that X-TC will set in a new, comletely different map,not knowing what to expect from, makes me confident that i will again experience that feeling wich i soo much pined for , for soo long.

And also the possibility to set the difficulty for the universe?O0
This is a great ideea,as we can set it to be as chalenging as it used to be like in x-btf and x2,and the veterans of the trilogy should know why..Really hope that our waiting will not continue for verry long. But as i said before,it is better to be as polished as possible than a rush release with many faults.

This is wonderful news! I'm 8 days late to it, of course, but still, I'm ecstatic. I shuddered when I bought X3TC and the ship designs were neither the same or as good as in X3 Xtended. Bring me back my Valhalla and Leviathan!

hmm, I was just reading about the player owned shipyards and thought, is it possible to 'queue' ship production?
i.e. if shipyards can crank out ships at pre-determined intervals consuming certain resources (and stop production once a limit is hit or it runs out of resources).

Being a totally new game (in poor words), there will be no possible compatibility with any preexisting saves.

I don't know what RRF is, but no compatibility with any existing mods and scripts is guaranteed. Better said: it is (will be) strongly suggested to NOT have any third party add-on installed where XTC should run.

Besides... <<###### static... ########>> comm was lost...

Question Time! :)
Improved Races adds in race invasions, as well as improves the Kha'ak, Xenon, and pirates. It doesn't change any ship statistics, and works with ship mods such as Killjaeden's Shipexpansion. Does anyone on the team happen to have any experience running IR, and know if it'll work?
Do the M1+, M2+, M7+ etc ship classes have their own, new ship designs?
Anything new going on with stations?
Reckon MARS will still work?
Are there any really cool, completely new additions you can tell us about? Like the equivalent to the original M7 concept, or unique shipyards?
Oh, and is it coming out before the end of the year?
That is all.

I doubt it will work as it would conflict with some of our planned scripts. It may work with the first release, but it's more likely to screw things up in many interesting ways instead.

Even if it does work with the first release, it definitely will not with the second as we have a whole slew of scripts that will conflict with IR in extremely deadly game killing ways planned for the second release.

Do the M1+, M2+, M7+ etc ship classes have their own, new ship designs?
Not sure what you want from this question. All the old XTM ships that were not in TC are added for XTC, and there are a few new ships in the mod. But we have already mentioned this in multiple posts.

If you want different info to that, you need to be a little more specific about what you meant.

Anything new going on with stations?
A little.

Reckon MARS will still work?
Not without a specific XTC build. We have changed the underlying weapons systems, not just tweaked stats - as mentioned in the news release.

Are there any really cool, completely new additions you can tell us about?
Umm... read the news? :p

Oh, and is it coming out before the end of the year?
We hope so, we are fed up with not having a release ourselves. But you do not undertake a complete overhaul of the game and expect it to be quick. We have been working on XTC almost a year and a half now, so we would like to release and get a short break as soon as we can as well. We are not holding the release up for the hell of it, we haven't released because the mod is not yet in a fit state to release.

In some respects it is like waiting for XTM 0.7 to come out, the wait is long, but the result will be worth it. ;)

Speaking of 0.7, I think it is time for the team to start using another old XTM saying to questions like this - "It will be done when it's done." ^^

Yes, we know it is taking a lot of time. Trust me, the development is taking an equally large amount of time out of our personal free time. There is no beta, and most likely there won't be one short of a proper release. At the moment, we are not ready to release any further info, so you will just have to read through these and previous news and get a list together yourself ;) Even there you will see a huge amount of changes.

For several reasons, the progress of the mod - what you'd call a finished/to do list - is not going to be public. Partially, the reason is that we are only giving out info on the things we are 100% certain about that they will be finished and in the release version.. We don't want to promise and then retreat from the expectations.

The problem is, that 99% of all required and really important changes are made out of code or cryptic XML files ;) It's not that intersting to hear that line xyz of script 123 has been successfully changed and is working as intended right now  For the modders working on it, it may seem like the landing on the moon, and they will feel proud, but for the players, later on, it will be only an action which a ship on the other end of the sector will perform, if it is visible at all. But these changes are important, and they repair or enable things that weren't working, or were never done like this ;) But overall, it's not that shiny to present a bunch of numbers and letters ;)

Re-installed X3TC a few nights ago with CMOD MARS and a few other bits and bobs + more "spawns" enemy's and so on (not that Iv noticed any diff yet) so if there is any parts that are in need of some gaming time scream and ill create a fresh install :)

True.
But there is definatly a point, where we can't give any news, because there are no news. We have already announced most of the included features in the mod and we are currently working to realize these all.

So what to speak about? Just giving screenshots or explaining more detailed what we are planning to do, will
a) hold us away from doing this work
b) increase the community's wish to get the mod and/or increase the number of questions, when it is available (lots of spam)

The only relevant "news" we can give now, is:
We are working on it.

vega
20-05-2010, 09:29 AM
My idea of "updates/news" has been alot lower then "new screenshots or big descriptions".
You are right, making extra work to give "us" new infos would be not worth the time, if the mod itself would "suffer" from it. And neither would it help if u talk about big features who will be questioned and as u said leading to alot unecessary discusion.

My thought/idea/hope was that the persons involved give minor info snippets, just to keep us "happy/involved"/the thread more active/create some "buzz".
Even if it is some basic info like
"added piercing dmg to weapon x", "enhanced building AI/God", "got a hard time with implementing Y", "x out of y system-backgrounds done", "added a new M? Ship", "finaly fixed a script-bug concerning Y"

just my 0.02$

So, if I understand you correctly, you just want to know how it's going, because you "fear" it's going to die due to the silence in the threads. Discussing such informations is not useful, as we are doing this work and also decide about it... this is no democracy for the community.

So the main question behind the informations you want to get is: When is it done?

We had a reason not to announce a release date, because there are situations which can result into not being able to fulfill such a set date. And we don't want to have to say to the community: "Hey, sorry, we didn't manage it until now... perhaps next time"

But to say something about work inside the mod:
We are currently 19 teammembers and most of them are more or less constantly active, so there is a lot of internal discussion and also work done.
The mod itself is steadily increasing in size and "readyness for releasing". Though there is still a lot to do.

Just for example:
Today, when I updated my working files, there were about 20 files which were changed from yesterday to today (by other members) and this is normal since I am member (May 2009), so internally it's the opposite from the silence in the forums, it's a lot done... but still a lot to be done ;)

vega
20-05-2010, 11:45 AM
So, if I understand you correctly, you just want to know how it's going,

yes, kind off

because you "fear" it's going to die due to the silence in the threads.
no, you got my full trust :}

So the main question behind the informations you want to get is: When is it done?
No, im fine with the answer "when its done".

My humble suggestion was just to be a bit more "talkative" concerning the progress - even if the infos are minor/tiny.
Because imho, this would keep the forum more active/might get new members(there are still ppl who dont know about XTM)/creates more "buzz" about the project.

Pretty much that's it, NovaCatt, with the difference that in our case piece A has been renamed G6, Slot E has been replaced with array Q.second.rel.vers.1.3.4.beta and Flange B is not usable for copyright issues and must be recreated using rings D, T, and H :D

Don't forget Oblivion and Morrowind. Where it all started... In fact, its interesting looking at the evolution of the CS over the years. For example, the NV CS (or GECK) has options for weapons mod which is something new, but still has currency listed as gold! But NV is lucky because all these great mods already exist and will be ported over as soon as the New Vegas Script Extender is out.

Hm, well, I don't agree on this subject with Stemardue - TC is worth playing it and if you didn't play it before XTC, you'll never know what we changed / made better / or worse (don't hope so ;) ).

i see, i did play TC when it was first released for a bit but never really got into it for some reason or other, cant remember now :? but i agree with both of you i suppose, i am familiar with the series of X games so i dont really need to play the vanilla but since i havent played TC in years i cant remember anything specific about it so i wont be missing much and it will just be like starting a new game i just bought :) thanks for the speedy replys, ill wait for the XTC i think. Any ideas on a release date yet, do i need to install all the updates for X3TC or anything like that to prepare? Cheers

Preparing - it never hurts to set a clean 3.0 installation aside for XTC :)

I generally agree with Trickmov, it is worth to play in X3: TC around a bit to see how the missions etc. work and what the balance is like, and so on - just to have a point of reference for the changes we've done.

I agree with Trickmov.
There have been some changes since the early XTC release.
As Eliah said, install a clean XTC ver 3.0 (plus bonus pack) and play until the...upcoming game...!!! ;)

**EDIT** Iniochos, if you want to use the callback system, it's the "@" symbol you need to use, not the "#" symbol.. I'm fairly sure that was just a typo on your part as both of those symbols are close together... So I corrected the symbols for you.... Cheers, NC ;) **END EDIT**

Thanks Novacatt. My MISTAKE.:o

**EDIT** Hey, don't panic about it mate, it's happened to all of us at times... ;) It's easy enough to do with them being so close to each other on the keyboard... If it seemed like I was upset with you over it, I'm sorry, I wasn't getting upset about it, I was just letting you know I fixed it for you, as I was sure it was a typo... So no harm done ;) Oh & your welcome! O0 Cheers, NC ;) **END EDIT**

"Before the end of the year."

I'm sorry, but that's all we're allowed to say! Still, as you said, we're running out of year, so it can't be too long, can it? ;)

:) True... As long as it's not the fiscal year! We've plenty of year left depending on which one of those is being used! :furious:

*gasp* The conspiracy revealed!

I can't wait to play this. I just hope a few of my scripts work for it still, I can't abandon my slipstream drive.

When the mod is released, will there be a torrent version, download manager friendly host, or several smaller rar/zip files?

At least for me, the net is unreliable, and some days (or sometimes, weeks) I wouldn't dream of completing a 500+ Mb file in one go.

And is there an approximation on what the size of the mod will be? (This close to release, I bet you have a guess)

The mod will be approx 650 meg download going on the last few builds we have done for the testers, and about 2 gig once uncompressed and installed. We also plan to have a torrent version for download on top of a direct download version to cater to people in your position MoH. :)

According to the direction the thread has taken over the month don't you guys think we should rename it a little bit? The given date of January the 22nd in 2010 is way out of... date. :s I will just cut the date so it will read 'XTC news'. If anyone has objections about it - feel free to post. ;)

I changed it back as the date denotes when the news in the OP was posted. Otherwise we would have three or four threads all called XTC News. ^^

If I like the mod, and I am pretty sure I will like it. Will I be able to send $ to your team via pay pal to support your effort?

You can donate to TXU whenever you want, that's our 'home' after all ^^

That's true, this web site exists because of the X-Tended mod and the people who worked on it (both for Reunion and now for TC). If you really appreciate both the mod and the site, donate up at the top of the page, there. I did, and I got a nice warm fuzzy in exchange. ;)

(Plus the ability to put obnoxious dancing robots etc. in my signature.)

If you want to "buy" (support) the X-Tended mod, I think that's probably the best way to do it. I know the mod is almost released, but you can be certain that there will be a lot more work to do on it even after the first release (if the first one, XTM, is any indication). And of course we all want this site to be around for as long as possible, and it does cost money to run.

As far as doing something nice for the dev team personally... I think what they really want out of the deal is for you to play the mod and have a great time with it! (And maybe tell everyone else how awesome it is.) ;)

Actually TXU would be here with or without XTM/XTC. Moko owns the site, not the team, and he generously allows us to host our mods here for free.

There is no way to donate to the team directly as we do this for free and wish it to stay that way, but if you do want to give thanks then donate to TXU as that will help Moko pay his monthly bills and allows us to have a place to call home. :)

Thank you for the correction, AS... I misunderstood the history of the site. I always thought it was created as a place to develop and host XTM. I came along some time after that, and I apologize (especially to Mokonzi!) for my misunderstanding. The point remains.... donating to TXU is a great way to ensure the future of XTC!
