after playing with the elite

So here is my WIP pics of the Xbtf Argon Discoverer (built from scratch)

cool 8)

Create the OTAS Discoverer ....
that would be cool

Cool Stevio! - Is blender for free? Ice- Dragon's told me that it can also extract to 3ds but there are problems with the textures..

Sastrei on sci-fi meshes is making a Prometheus model (BSG) using Blender.... worth having a look.

Is Blender easy to use? (for the ultra novice like me!)

10-05-2007, 08:21 PM
it looked very intimidating at first but once you follow the tutorial "noob to pro"
you start to get the hang of it and after a few hours it becomes natural

so far i have only spent 2 hours on the disco, which is fast for my strandards of modelling :o

and yes its free http://www.blender.org/
much better than Gmax O0

10-05-2007, 08:33 PM
Might have a go if my future wife will let me.......... :kapow: :kapow: :kapow:

he he he!

Nice work there Stevio, it's good to see someone else using blender here,
hope to see more of this ship.

10-05-2007, 08:42 PM
Ah good work Stevio. I know its not likely but this ship would be great for the mod. I know it's an absolutely ancient ship in the X- Universe, lol, but then again London cabs are absolutely ancient too  . It could even possibly fill the role of "old banger that teenagers usually buy as their first car". Whaddya reckon? Cheap as chips to buy, poor specs but it gives you a chance to have a fly round and do some taxi work for next to nothing. If not for the player use then at least let the AI have it for taci work lol.

10-05-2007, 08:47 PM
If you'd like to have a look at Coxxon's Bsg models in blender format try here....

might try and fiddle around ruining these models as a learning process.

10-05-2007, 09:21 PM
cool thx for the linky! :)

10-05-2007, 09:58 PM
The furthest i've ever got with models is loading up the X3 models for a look... and then stretching all the vertices so it looks like a pineapple: After having to reinstall, i gave up on the second part :P

10-05-2007, 11:49 PM
Its all still raw wip but a few update pics on some more detail
obviously once some smooth modfiers are on it will look much nicer ;)

Detail to the cockpit
RR Thruster added
L & R hand Intakes added

11-05-2007, 11:42 AM
Not bad, but aesthetically it would be a bit better if you make the elevated part on the two front-sticking-out-thingies even a bit more higher, you know, so to make them look like massive engine intakes.

Also, I believe some kind of impressive grill would look nice aswell on those intakes, and naturally weapon spots would be 2 underneath each engine(front-sticking-out-thingie) or underneath the cockpit.

11-05-2007, 11:47 AM
Nice ship. O0

Would be happy to see it in 0.7b/0.8

11-05-2007, 11:51 AM
nice comments eliah

i agree on all points, it will get better with the more time i spend on it

11-05-2007, 10:17 PM
I think it looks pretty good (but i know nothing about modelling unfortunately).

Anyways, I never played XBTF, but was it inspired in anyway by Wing Commander? I think I remember something like that back in the days of Wing Commander: Armada. Something Kilrathi perhaps?

11-05-2007, 10:48 PM
not sure :?

i suppose every ship has its inspiration from one show/game or another

i am kinda leaning towards giving the disco a Cylon Raider-like aspect to it - for obvious reasons

12-05-2007, 03:15 AM
I'm ok with the Cylon Raider too.

One of my friends introduced me to BSG...I've been a huge fan since.

I haven't seen any of season 3 though (going to wait til the DVDs come out)...so I'm staying away from the BSG section of TXU for a bit.

Any references to season 3 are all spoilered atm except for the Depository thread which will be used as reference. So don't be afraid to have a look at the rest of the forum - it shouldn't spoil your viewing :)

I never played XBTF, but was it inspired in anyway by Wing Commander?
It was mostly inspired by the third Elite game which was subtitled Frontier...hence the name X-Beyond the Frontier.
Being a big Elite fan myself I bought X-btf as soon as it was released and, I wasn't dissappointed. I enjoyed playing,
although, it was slightly diferent from Elite...you could land on planets in Elite for one thing :)

13-05-2007, 11:08 PM

theres still some noticable poly errors which i am too tired to be bothered about atm
but i think the overall design is start to take shape

although i think i went a bit to mad with smoothing it

Your Comments Please!

13-05-2007, 11:27 PM
Looking better all the time Stevio :) although the smoothing is a bit too OTT. Some parts looks good, but the front protusions dont suit the smoothing...just makes it look like an inflatable toy  . They suit being more edgey at the front but definitely around the cockpit looks nice with some smoothing (although a little less would be perfect). O0

14-05-2007, 04:22 AM
Agree, the intakes and all front must be edged. Otherwise it is good, a lot better than previous versions.. But I reckon some tubes (the ones just behind the cockpit glass) would be good on the intakes aswell, make them, look more engine-y

14-05-2007, 07:19 AM
very nice update Stevio - keep it up!

14-05-2007, 02:46 PM
Good work! The ship is getting better and better. O0

14-05-2007, 10:02 PM
Personally i'm quite fond of the "rounding off". It works quite well, and makes the ship that bit more unique O0

14-05-2007, 10:05 PM
Sorry L but that version has been scrapped

i've gone back a bit and am redoing the smoothing so it not so smooth :P
also i am redoing certain features because they just don't look right :?

14-05-2007, 10:10 PM
I'll... i'll get my mum on you! I suppose I'll let you off if you do a good job...

05-06-2007, 07:02 PM
small update i havent spent much time on it since last update
so nothing major

reworked the engine components
wings changed slightly
cockpit updated a bit also

I-D's orinoco got me back on blender asap :P

I-D's orinoco got me back on blender asap :P

It's really looking good, love what you've done to the wings Keep it up 8)

05-06-2007, 09:01 PM
Looking good Stevio, and yours as well I-D :)

I sense a retro mod in the works !!

05-06-2007, 09:10 PM
lol I-D

i doubt very much i will put this in my own mod
the word pointless comes to mind
altho i will offer it to whoever wishes to use it
when its ready of course

05-06-2007, 09:13 PM
I agree with Boomshaka, lol, once the discoverer is finished and upto Xtended standard then I think it would a great addition to 0.8 as a courier/passenger ship, much like the current MkI versions of the Centaur/Osprey etc! Looking better all the time Stevio O0 the guide was right when it was titled "from noob to pro"!

05-06-2007, 10:19 PM
the guide was right when it was titled "from noob to pro"!

i'm flattered you think i am a pro, but i am still a noob  i struggle for ideas most of the time :(

06-06-2007, 05:26 PM
But still, lol, you're not exactly a noob anymore eh? A decade ago you would be considered a pro! I mean look at the model...it's basically looking exactly like it did in X-BTF (minus the textures of course) :)

Small update
worked on the overall neatness of the mesh, which still needs alot of work :(
hope you like it

12-06-2007, 09:55 PM
Thats very nice work Stevio! 8)

12-06-2007, 10:09 PM
Well, amybe if you spent less time sticking your avatar on things, you'd have finished that mesh by now! Lol, im just kidding :P I wish I could do these things to even a tenth of your level...

12-06-2007, 10:15 PM
the background didnt take me very long perhaps 5mins... :P
i find myself erasing hours of work either because of "that looks s**t" :x or "oh c**p i didnt save!" >:(

but it will get finished... one day...

12-06-2007, 10:17 PM
I look forward to it :)
Where did you learn your model skills? Internet tuts?

12-06-2007, 10:20 PM
yup there are alot of good tuts around its just finding them that it the hard part :(
a good forum is blender artists (http://blenderartists.org/forum/index.php)
i started modeling with gmax then went to blender about 6 weeks ago

Looking good m8. O0

13-06-2007, 07:38 AM
I felt inspired and found out how to do some :) Thanks!!http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i314/Legartius/untitled-1.jpg

-Post edited so the link works. :P AS-

13-06-2007, 04:30 PM
Looking good there Stevio O0 seems you're getting the hang of blender.

Can't wait to see this ship finished.

13-06-2007, 05:33 PM
thx for the comment guys O0

thats a very cool looking desin there L 8)

13-06-2007, 06:47 PM
TY :) I'm hoping to do something a little more substantial once I get some planning... alot of this is thinking ahead!

(thx for the edit, AS :))

13-06-2007, 07:53 PM
The ship looks cool, so cool that I downloaded GMAX, DBOX; X2BC and YAGG now and started working through the tutorials. Don Žt know what for a ship IŽll make first, but I think itŽll be a KhaŽak-ship, they seem to be the easiest one.

13-06-2007, 07:58 PM
Great to see so many community members having a go at modelling and with great results

Keep it up guys! :)

06-08-2007, 02:30 AM
Has anyone written a guide on how to export Blender stuff to X3? I love working with Blender.

06-08-2007, 10:10 AM
I believe Blender can export to 3ds, you could then use Gmax - its for free

With this program it is possible to export the model to X3

You might also need Dbox http://www.doubleshadow.wz.cz/

Then there are a number of different tutorials available on ES - one of the most popular ways to get ships in game is Cycrow's ship installer.

Hope it helps.

06-08-2007, 08:04 PM
Thanks for the info, Elfin.

And Stevio, whoever it was that recommended making the front wings of the Disco into huge intakes was right on...that would be awesome!

06-08-2007, 08:10 PM
Will have to start again :(
i forgot to back up a copy when i installed vista (why oh why) and it got corrupted DOH! >:(
and funnily enough the same goes for my raider aswell

just as well really there were loads of bits i hated about the disco that could only be undone via restarting :P

07-08-2007, 11:58 AM
Dang that's too bad... :( It makes me think though. You know, those sci-fi meshes guys have a repository of models of various ships from different sci-fi shows. We ought to come up with a repository for X Universe models where we could upload our stuff and dowload others' stuff and tweak it, etc.

You would never lose a model again, and if someone wanted to try their idea on your Disco, they could download your model and try it without having to make one from scratch themselves.

Dunno, could be a good thing. I personally would not know where to begin in setting up something like that, but thexuniverse.com would be a good place for it if they have enough space.

07-08-2007, 07:25 PM
uploading an egosoft ship model would be a breach of eula :P
