Default Random frequent crash to desktop

      Hallo

I get a lot of CTD from X3:TC.. it seems related to targeting.. sometimes when I target something I crash directly to desktop, no error window, no nothing. It's extremely frustrating. It doesn't always require a retarget though, occasionally it happens out of the blue for no apparent reason.

Does anybody else have this problem? Is there a thread somewhere with suggestions to fix it? I tried a search, but I got no results..

I haven't heard of this problem before. Doesn't mean others haven't tho.

      Hiya Xeo,
interesting, not seen any CTD's in TC at all so far

I was wondering if you could give me a little more info on your setup.

      CPU
      HDD Space (remaining)
Game resolution and settings (AA and the like)
      Sector you're in

Oh and the version of TC you're running, i'm assuming it's 1.2.1

      Thanks

      Kevso

      Hi Kevso

      AMD 64 FX62 dual-core
HD free: 141G out of 243G

      1680x1050x32 Fullscreen
      AA 8x, ATF8x
      Glow enabled
      Texture High
      Shader High
      Dynamic light off
      Ship color on
      AQC off

      Steam version, v.1.2.1

I've tried a couple different configurations, and seen it pretty much consistently.. sometimes I can play for an hour or two before it happens, sometimes it happens quickly.

Right now I'm in Nathan's Voyage but it has happened elsewhere.

      Possible soundcard issue:
It may be your soundcard is crashing for some reason, from my experience soundcard freezes usually ctd without an explanation. Because Betty (shipboard computer) says something every time you target something, and also whenever missiles are fired (in fact she gets quite chatty at times) i'm thinking this is causing your ctd when you target.

If you have sound card probs it'll usually just shut the application down or get stuck in a sound loop. Try Turning down/off the hardware acceleration on your sound card, old and outdated sound drivers may be the the problem too so it wouldnt hurt to update them either.

      Soundcard Hardware acceleration:
Control panel > Sounds and audio Devices > Speaker settings (advanced button) > Perforrmance tab: Then Turn down the hardware acceleration on the slider.

I think Ulfius mentions an important point. I had several problems with my Xi-Fi Gamer card after installing X3:TC. Extreme lags and the video sequences were lagging like hell. After updating my drivers with the new creative patch i noticed a better performance. The patch notes stated that OLDER versions of EAX and so on have been reenabled for this patch. After i turned of the XiFi CMSS 3d feature the game runs almost perfect. Only in big fights with many overlaying explosions i get some lags (flak explosions and many ship explosions overlaying) It's just speculation, but if X3:TC uses the same sound for different weapon effects and explosions and the distance is only simulated by the sound volume i can imagine why sounds may causes loops like ulfius mentioned.

Maybe it'll get better once XTC is under construction and we get different sound settings

      Hi Guys,
Hardware acceleration can certainly be the cause of CTD's in some programs and games also as Galder correctly states drivers can also be an issue. I personally haven't had problems with TC crashing atm, so i can't confirm these solutions but based on previous experience with other games this does sound like the most likely cause.
