      Red face So... Many... Choices...

I love ships. I mean, who doesn't? I supposed what I want to know is everyone elses opinion on ships. Specifically, which class, which race, and what you think makes it so totally awesome. I'd like your input on this mostly because I can't decide for myself. Personally I like the Destroyers and Carriers. So far my favorite Destroyer is the Osaka and my favorite Carrier is the Shark. But, again I want your input on this. Thanks all!

The Osaka is nice, but you need to place yourself in the turret for firing PSPs. He can mount SSC all around and this gives him a very good protection. 8 PSP to the front rest SSC.

My personal favourite is the Ray. He's the only destroyer who's able to operate 24 PPCs at the same time. How? Buy one and test it 8 PPC front/left/right rest FAA. Good protected, annihilates simply everything.

The Boreas is ugly and can't mount FAA or somthing similar in the side turrets. You end up with a useless turret with expensive weapons to the side, because you can't operate it against fighters with mounted PPCs or it just stays dead, because you gave it the command "attack my target". This ship is poorly designed as every other M2 in TC. Only the Ray benefits from Gazz turret fix, but that happened accidentially and i think he still doesn't know it The worst M2 are in this order:
Most bad ->Phoenix/Python/Titan/Odysseus/Boreas<-bad (They all need the MARS script, and i hate to give away the control about my weapons. I get a foamy mouth when i see a DESTROYER firing HEPTs at M3). Acceptable : Osaka and Tyr. Good: Ray

There's only one carrier in TC, and that's the Panther. The rest isn't worth a penny. Just my 2 cents They can't mount heavy weapons in their front turret and no FAA or something similar to their rear turret. If you already have a shark, sell or scrap him, that's more fun than flying around with him

Stick to the M7 class, they are the better Carriers and Destroyers

I have to agree about the Panther. I bought one after reading Galder's excellent description of Capital Ship combat in X3TC, and I use the Panther as my mobile base of operations. I keep all my favorite fighters in it... like my Kestrel that I use for dropping satellites and exploring new areas, my Advanced Perseus that I use for walloping bad guys with 8 PBEs, and any ships that I capture, I can just repair 'em real quick and order them to dock in the Panther. And if the Kha'ak or the Xenon happen to invade a sector when I'm trying to do a build mission or something, I just fly through them in the Panther, and they all die instantly. (Flak FTW)

On the other hand, if you want to wipe out an entire sector, try a Missile Frigate or a Bomber. The Missile Frigate can destroy more fighters than you will ever see in one sector (or two or three sectors) before running low on Flails, and since it only takes maybe 20-30 Hammer Torpedoes to blow up any M1 or M2 you're likely to fight, the M7M literally has nothing to fear until it runs out of ammo.

I mentioned Bombers.... in theory, they need to be protected from fighters. However, the Split Viper is fast enough that it can get away from most enemy fighters, and it can carry enough Tomahawk Heavy Missiles to wipe out a dozen capital ships before it needs to re-arm. Try it for yourself.... get a Split Viper, max the cargo bay to 700 (and of course max out the speed as well) and load it up like this:

Shields (4x25mj): 40 units of cargo space
Pulsed Beam Emitter (for rear turret, set to Missile Defense): 8 units
      130 Energy Cells: 130 units
      11 Fighter Drones: 22 units
250 Tomahawk Heavy Missiles (500 units)

Total cargo space used: 700 exactly

What you do is.... fly into an enemy sector (such as a Xenon sector... or Argon Prime if you're at war with the Argon, or whatever!) and immediately start to run AWAY from any enemy ships on your Gravidar. Keep your distance. At 175 m/s and with a good head start, you shouldn't have to worry about fighters for a while.

Target a capital ship, or a frigate, or an M6, or whatever, and look to see how much shielding it has. A Tomahawk does 625,000 damage, which is equal to 625mj of shielding. So if a ship has 4gj (4,000mj) of shields, 7 Tomahawks should do the job. HOWEVER, some of them are likely to get shot down, so add a few more for good measure! I would fire 10-12 at a 4gj target (like a Xenon Q).

They'll take a while to get to the target, but as long as he doesn't go out of their range (over 40km!) they WILL find him and kill him. You don't have to wait for them to get there, though.... find another target and repeat.

If enemy fighters get close, you have options.... if it's an M3, you can actually kill it with a Tomahawk, since M3s are pretty slow. If they're M4s and M5s, though, you'd better leave. Deploy a Fighter Drone while running away, then activate the Jump Drive. You don't have to jump out of the sector, just jump to a gate that doesn't have enemies near it. This only takes 10 energy cells. That way you have enough drones and enough energy to make these "escape jumps" 11 times, and you'll have 20 energy cells left over... which is enough to jump out of the sector when playtime is over.

With 250 Tomahawks, an M8 can dish out 156 GIGAJOULES of damage, making it probably the most-overlooked ship type in the game. I think people usually don't bother with them because they're so helpless against fighters... so people prefer Missile Frigates instead. Like I said, however, the Viper is fast enough that it doesn't need any stinkin' escort. It's a lot more fun flying at 175 m/s than plodding along at 91 m/s in an Aquilo... and don't get me started on the turn rate. An Aquilo takes so long to turn around that you might as well get up and make a pot of coffee while you wait... but the Viper handles like a fighter.

I have cleared out entire Xenon sectors in both an Aquilo and a Viper, and each is fun in its own way, so take your pick. The difference is mainly that the Aquilo will "park" and not move, while the Viper will require you to fly around a lot. There is another difference from a manufacturing perspective, as well: a Tomahawk factory will make 9 Tomahawk Missiles per hour, while a Hammer fab will only make 4 for the same time and cost. Remember, Tomahawks do more than TWICE as much damage as Hammers... but Hammers take more than twice as long to make! So if you're into being economical, the Tomahawk is about five times more efficient to manufacture than the Hammer... which is a good reason to learn how to use a Bomber.

Anyway, those are some of my favorite ships. If only I could actually dock my Viper on my Panther.... I would literally never need another ship except those two! (Well, I still like exploring in my Kestrel at 605 m/s...)

I always play my game as the Terrans and the Argon Federation, so I never really use the lovely range of ships out there; I prefer to keep my fleets unified and using the same empires ships. Call me weird, but I think it's pretty cool to have identical fleets, seems more realistic in terms of a military
