Depends what you're after. M5's (scouts/light fighters) can work quite well in large swarms against large capital ship weapons as they're too fast for their weapons and can keep out of range.(Be wary of Cap ships with anti-fighter weaponry such as flak though)
M4/M4+ (medium fighters/super medium fighters) are stronger than an M5 but cheaper than an M3 (in some cases anyway), could work quite well fighter vs. fighter)
M3/M3+ (heavy/super heavy fighters) Can cost a lot both in credits and reputation (need a decently high reputation with a race to be able to buy them from them) but give a nice solid ship.
Just one of those annoying things where you have to decide whether you want a multi purpose fleet of mixed class fighters than can bring down most stuff but don't have a specialty or if you wanna go swarms of M5s or a group of M3s to take out cap ships. Specific fighters.. well I'll leave that to others.
This isn't advice from a complete pro though.
      Thanks,adal8or.

I am a fan of the Otas M4+. I use them upgraded to the max in swarms where they are quite competent. They can also hit 200 k/s which is quite nice for interceptions. It is also relatively cheap versus a larger fighter which makes it an asset rather than an investment. I can afford to lose a few of these

Well, if you've finished the Terran plot....

      spoiler:
Probably the best fighter in the entire game has got to be the Spitfyre. It's an M3 that you can purchase from the Shipyards in Aldrin. It has 75 mj of shielding, 8 guns on the front, and a rear turret with 2 guns. It can mount prototype M/AM launchers on the front, making it capable of taking on heavy targets (although it can't carry very much ammo if you actually put 8 M/AMs on it, because the guns take up a lot of room), or it can mount EEMPCs for lighter jobs. But, most importantly, it has an AMAZING top speed of 452 m/s!! That's faster than about half of the M5 ships available, and those typically only have from 1-5 mj of shields. Not only that, but it's also the most maneuverable of all the M3 fighters, with a steering rate of 88.47 rpm. The only problem is that Egosoft screwed up somehow, and the factories in Aldrin that are supposed to be manufacturing the EEMPCs to go on it are not actually making them. In my game, there are NO EEMPCs in existence. HOWEVER - they are adding an EEMPC factory in the next patch! Not only does this mean you'll be able to buy them directly, but it should also mean that the EQ docks (called "Unknown Aldrin Base") will eventually stock them, and THAT means you'll be able to order them installed on new Spitfyres that you buy from the shipyard. So if there are 8 EEMPCs in stock, and you order 10 Spitfyres (the most fighters you can buy at once), then you'll get 10 fighters all equipped with 8 EEMPCs. The BACK turret of the Spitfyre is weird, because it mounts the NORMAL EMPC (not the experimental version), which you can buy in Terran space. I have a feeling that once patch 2.0 comes out, I'm going to be buying lots of Spitfyres....

P.S. To answer your other question, I believe you can order as many ships as you want from any shipyard, but you're limited to buying 10 fighters (or freighters) at a time, and only 1 capital ship at a time. Equipment Docks, however, do NOT have unlimited supplies, so if you want lots of fighters that are well-equipped, you'll need your own factories producing shields and weapons. You can look for a shipyard that sells an "L" version of the fighter you want... that SHOULD have good shields and weapons already installed, although I've noticed they tend to skimp on the weapons. For example, a fighter that can mount 8 guns forward might only come with 4, even if you buy the "L" version. (You can see exactly what it will come with if you press "u" while that ship is highlighted in the shipyard menu.)

Personally, the only "fleet" I use is a fleet of missiles. They're like really, really cheap fighters, and you don't even have to wait for them to re-dock after the fight.

Yea, but its fun sitting in a Raptor then pressing F6 to release your fiery waves of doom. And its also fun running away from your carrier in a khaak sector with your own little personal M5 supertuned to 2000 m/s.
(Anyone think you should be able to ride missiles?)
      Thanks,adal8or.

      I love the Cutlass

It is a ship which can fight against everything until M6 maybe M7.

The Cutlass is fast, have high shields and good weapons energy.
But it is expensive (~5,5 millions or so) and you can only use one type of weapon.

I use it for everything under M7 and for hte rest the Vidar

Buy it and you will win nearly every fight except Kha'ak (they are special )

I have two cutlass and they survived almost every battle so far
Good ships cost money, so if they worth it i will happily pay or steal lol...

What's the problem with the Kha'ak?
The almost no miss with their weapons?
