Was cruising the net (as you do when you're bored/or had been reading a completely different article & something else catches your eye... ), when I found this little article & decided it was worth posting on here....

It's all about a spinning heatsink for CPU's...

      linkie

      Enjoy...

      Hiya Peeps,

Ahh spammy, spammy, spammy... where would I be without you to keep me grounded in reality?

Ya gotta admit, it's a novel approach to keeping ya CPU cool & the heatsink fan blades dust free, plus if they do get it manufactured to their spec's quite a few people will be lining up to get one for a few reasons:
1: it's supposed to be quieter & cooler....
2: no more applying messy thermal paste to the CPU/heatsink every few yrs....
3: it's the latest & greatest piece of PC* hardware to hit the shelves in the last few years (until something new comes along that is... )...

      Cheers & Thranx

Jokes apart, i have always been tought (either by others or by experience) that heat dissipation relies principally on the tight contact of the heat source and the cooling fluid, be that air/gas or liquid.

Now in this case i am rather puzzled on how the tight contact between a CPU and the spinning heatsink is maintained, thus my doubts on the efficiency of this device... surely the 'fan' will stay cool and dust free, but what about the CPU or whatever else this thing is supposed to keep cool? In other words i am convinced that having the heatsink spinning will be a good and efficient method to keep the very heatsink well cooled... i'm not so convinced that the thermal transference between the spinning part and the socket can be as good through its axle as it could be through a glued together flat surface with or without the improvement given by thermal pastes.

On top of it: to spin that thing needs a motor, and we know that nobody has still built the perfect machine where all the power is converted to work - i.e. a good part of the power to make it spin creates additional heat (by electrical resistence of the electromagnetic engine, mechanical friction, etc.)

These are my main doubts about it
