I might build a new compy so I've got a question to any one who wants to help me build a new rig. I want to go with a Intel chip set board, obviously this will be a gaming rig, so any one have any suggestions on what brands to go for, CPU's, dual or quad core, memory? Any feed back would be appreciated, thanks.

      Hi there 101010,

I've been sitting on my current rig (figuratively) for over a year already, so i'm kind of off the run for latest hardware, but i stumbled into this thread at techspot which seems to have a lot of decent suggestions, and the posts/comments are quite polite (so it's not the typical 'mine is bigger than yours' kids thread ^^ )

Hope you find some good hints there

Throw in water cooling to keep the tempurature and noise levels down, and the rig described above sounds like a great computer.

The biggest things I'm concerned about right now is the mother board and CPU. Also is a DDR memory mother board back ward compatible with DDR 2 memory. I want to scavenge as much from my current rig as possible to keep price down for now.

most of modern mobos are incomtiable with DDR2 but AM2 and LGA775 mobos are compatiable. however you can't insert modern CPU in it. RAM is pretty cheap nowaday. 8GB DDR3 only for 50-60$.

If you want get something done do it by yourself

So what about the Intel Core i7-2700K? would this be overkill for the CPU?

Depends on if you feel you would use the hyper-threading enough to warrant the extra expense. If your main use for the PC is gaming (Over 80% of the use of the computer) then you could get a 2500K (if your sticking to sandybridge and not going for IB) and save approx 80-100 to put into another area of the PC, without noticing any difference for gaming. Anything that uses hyper-threading will be slightly slower, but as that is a small amount of the use you are putting the chip too, it won't be that noticeable.

On the other hand if you do a large amount of video encoding or 3D rendering, then depending on local prices you may find a 2600K slightly cheaper and still get HT for those areas. (The 2600K and the 2700K are the same chips just binned differently. Basically 2700K's are cherry picked 2600K's. They will OC to the same levels and so unless you are going for extreme OC's that absolutely need the most stable chips you can find, a 2600K is just as good.)
