Cool Sam Silarn...the name goes on in X4

      Sam’s Troubles

      Chapter 1: Getting Started

Sam Silarn III was a nice young man that was slightly athletic and good looking. He just graduated from the Argon Pilots Academy and was walking down the line of ships in the Black Hole Sun Wharf.

He got a decent amount from his friends and family and so was pretty sure he could get his first ship today. So as he walked along the one salesman saw him and rushed out to make a sale and was quickly waved away.

“I don’t remotely know what I want yet so go away until I can decide.” He ordered as the man tried to say that with his help…but Sam gave him a look to freeze his blood… and the man left as quickly as he came.

Sam had worked with ships part time since his 14th birthday and he knew enough to know that he had basically 2 choices today. Either a small fast fighter with little to no firepower, or a tiny but new miner, something he could use to then get himself something better later on. Both S class… if he didn’t want payments.

If he looked at it logically then he really had one good choice and another side thing that he didn’t want to consider…so after looking up and down the line for a while he waved his arm and the sales man was right there all smiles.

“If I buy new and put say…half down… what can I get then?” he asked sadly, after deciding that nothing he saw was going to make him happy with the small amount he was carrying.

“And half would be??” The man hinted as Sam decided to go for broke.

“200,000…” he added as the man looked more than happy with that.

“For that amount quite a lot, both new and used.” He got told, and away they went first looking at good used ships, and they had a decent amount of those too, all nicely dented and shot up, and then to the terminal to see all the new ships at that price range.

“Fighters or miners or…?” He got asked again and try as he might Sam couldn’t decide because his dream ship was way beyond this trip today.

He looked all over the entire scale of things, flipping from mining ships to freighters to fighters, all S class and M too, since it depended on how you equipped them you might get a new medium ship for that down and payments that he wasn’t going to like either way. But fighters might look better, but having the smallest made, made sure you would be dead this month too and he wasn’t ready for that trip yet. And if he didn’t get some work fast after this deal, he’d be starving in less than a week, something his family would never let him forget.

“What about this one?” He asked and the man turned the screen around to see a gray ship, thin with big tail fins and a decent streamlined look.

“M class miner?” he asked as Sam nodded agreement and they went through the options list and he was surprised that 200,000 was more than enough to buy the frame and only the options would be going on his tab. Sam also knew another thing, with Xenons and Khaak around in many of the outer sectors many were afraid to go out alone, and so many stations were short on…well everything…and he knew he could pay off this debt in record time if he stayed safe and secure long enough.

“Standard mining beam and 2 medium turrets and medium shields?” the man asked as Sam nodded again, punching a few buttons as options started adding up. The total wasn’t bad at all and it carried a decent amount and he knew he’d have it paid for before he left the home sector for sure.

“And the down payment?” he asked, as Sam begrudgingly handed him nearly every credit chip he got today and the man checked the amount and a card came out of the machine with his account numbers on it and the order was sent, and the automated wharf crew started construction, as Sam stood by watching, and in less than an hour he owned a new ship, and he walked across the massive floor to the big gray thing and looked it over carefully. He had spent every credit he owned for this and it was bigger than he first thought, and didn’t look bad either and as he sat in the Command chair for the first time he got his first message…from the bank saying his first payment was due in 60 days… and Sam smiled his best smile and lifted off and out the big doors he went to look for work.

      Chapter 2: Hauling it in

Sam flew along getting used to this big thing and saw a few of his friends going for their first rides too. One called over saying he better hurry because he had his first job already and when he dropped his passenger off he’d be 100,000 ahead of Sam the first day.

But Sam just laughed at him, waved and closed the link, and as he went past 3 different stations they all were short on something and prices were pretty good too. So he turned from the trade lanes out into the asteroids along the edge of the system. They had been mined for ages but there were a lot of them left, and he got a load faster than he thought he would and started to see that his choice might not be as bad as he first thought.

Within the hour he had another 15,000 in his account and he went out for more. He owed the bank 150,000 more or less and so this was going to make that up pretty fast.

He made 3 trips that day and called home to tell his mom, dad and grandfather that he was doing OK, and they applauded his efforts.

“Always watch out when you’re working alone, sometimes good things come your way when you least expect it.” His grandfather reminded him as Sam agreed, while rolling his eyes at the free info he got every time they were talking. He had heard these things since he was old enough to remember, and even though his grandfather had done very well for himself Sam knew he would do things his own way and not be swayed by all this free advise.

But if he was right his first payment would be his last, and his credit account would shoot through the roof when the bank saw he was this stable and responsible. Getting a good credit rating was the key…and he was sure he was on the right track here.

Three days out, and he had a good amount in his account again, nearly getting back everything he had spent, and now he knew this debt wasn’t going to be a problem and when his first payment came due it would be his last for certain. And he had 50 days left so this wasn’t even anything to worry about.

As he stopped at the trading station for a hot meal he saw a few from his class there talking and waving and he sat down with them and they exchanged stories about their first week on their own. From finding cargos with tens of thousands floating for free, to getting chased out of a asteroid belt by pirates, they all got a good laugh at other peoples troubles. But luckily no one had died they knew of, and that was good too.

“I wish we all were so lucky…” One young man said as others nodded they understood. Even though their parents had the cash to send them to school it didn’t mean they could afford a ship on graduation day. There were probably half their class out there looking for work, and doing just about anything to get some. And they all felt sorry for them knowing that they were on their own like everyone else, but that they were having a harder time than most.

“Maybe we can help them later on.” Sam hinted and a few there smiled and nodded and it seemed like a plan.

Even his family had their ups and downs over time, but slowly they found their place as Private Security and now were more than a little well known.

But in this week Sam saw that mining was being ignored a lot now. Even in sectors pretty secure with patrols everywhere many thought it beneath them, or were too scared to try it, and his first ship proved to him that there was a need many were not even trying to fix. But he would…and with things working well for him now he just might put another ship to work soon…and still be able to pay of his debt ahead of time. All he needed was a little more of a push, and he decided to see what the other Black Hole Sun sectors had to offer too.

      Chapter 3: Stepping Up

He went through the gate for the first time and into a new sector. Now he made the same trip again, checking out stations and seeing what was needed and what they would pay. Just like his home sector things were slow, and patrols were everywhere, so things were a little tense. But he made a turn and went looking any ways, and after a short run to the outside of the station rows he found a smaller asteroid field… just one corner of the sector… but it held some really nice rocks.

A few high level ore asteroids that looked good, and there was one miner working on those too when he got there, so he moved on and a few miles further away he found three silicon asteroids, one really nice and two just average in ore density, and he grabbed a load of that quickly and made his first sale of the day, and another 60,000 went into his account and he smiled really wide now.

By mining these rocks he knew for a fact that he would be fine. Hell, he might buy another miner too, maybe just an S class to help someone out from his class, even 6-10 thousand a day beat the hell out of being unemployed, and he was sure they would agree. So without a thought he sent a early payment in and paid off his debt, and his Credit with the bank went up nicely and he got a message saying anything he would want in the future they hoped he’d consider them next time too, and he smiled and went back to replacing that amount in good time.

It took a week working some long hours but he was back at where his account was at its best. Now he could easily buy a second ship…especially if it was an S class for someone for a starter.

He left people know he was looking for a pilot, and within 2 days he got a call and he saw a young girl from his class that he had met before.

“Hi Sam, are you looking for a partner?” She asked as he informed her he wasn’t looking for that at all, but was thinking of hiring a second pilot for another small miner.

“Hey I didn’t mean it THAT way you moron.” She said sourly as he laughed and asked if she was looking for work. “Ya…I cant afford a ship of my own so I have to do something. I promised my mom I’d get out on my own and make something of myself... well that hasn't happened yet.” She said sadly, and he felt bad for her so he offered her the job. Fly his small miner for half…and she took it.

They met at the wharf and watched as the little miner was built and after a nice hug she ran down to take it out for the first time, and he went back to get his moving again too. He felt good helping out a friend, and now she could tell her parents that she was a working pilot…and he was sure that would mean the world to them.

And within the hour he saw a flash come across his screen and he forgot that since she was in his ship, every time she sold something he got the notice, and they made a nice 10,000 that trip, and he knew now she wasn’t going to be doing without food for a while at least, and his little ship started paying for itself and he wasn’t even in it.

      Chapter 4: Company Man

In a month the little ship paid for itself and Clara was never so happy. Sam left her know when it happened, and then gave her a little raise for staying and working for him after that. She looked so happy that she might cry, but agreed quickly to work for him at least until she could afford her own ship, and he agreed to that too.

He also knew that when people have a steady income they tend to spend it, and so he just smiled and left her go again as she saw better times ahead for herself and her parents, who were having some hard times of their own.

But Sam hadn't been idle all this time either and his account was approaching his first Million, and his smile started to show every time another good load got sold. He was told at home that no one can claim they are a success until they have at least 1 million in the bank, and at 20 Sam was rapidly approaching that magic number and his ego was starting to show.

He decided that just a few more loads especially silicon or God forbid…Nividium… and he would be the only one in his class to make that magical number…and first does mean something to others that might be getting close too.

So out he went, always further than everyone else, and he found some really good spots too and brought in good ores for sale, and after a long day he set up watching another load coming in…and fell asleep listening to the hum of the mining beam and the ‘ping, ping’ of the radar.

It might have been the beam shutting down when the load was full or the sudden change from ‘ping…ping’ to a sudden ‘whoop, whoop’ that made him wake up but all he saw was a flashing red icon of a missile and he barely got his hands on the controls when it hit.

“Engine 3 is down…” the computer said as Sam rushed to start the travel drive, which seemed to not want to work at the moment, and so he started the automatic distress beacon hoping that a patrol was close by. But as he got up to speed another alarm went off and he started to swear and he sat back and pulled in his feet as the cocoon formed around him and his ship was torn in two, which thankfully he would be spared watching.

The ship was torn into pieces and the raiders looted whatever they could get and left , laughing to themselves that the fool didn’t even have his turrets activated, and Sam heard it too and felt like crying. He had gotten sloppy and in a hurry, and now he might well die out here…but his luck was holding out, at least a little and as his oxygen level made it to half way he felt a jerk and his escape pod went on board a M class ship and they flew him back to civilization to make his official report.

“Raiders huh?” the Naval Captain asked as Sam agreed saying they knew he was right there in a pod and laughed at him and looted his ship and flew away before the Navy got there, and Sam filled out all the forms they asked of him and found out he made 1 more TINY mistake. He was running for more than a month…without insurance of any kind… as even the officer looked away to keep from laughing in his face.

“I know… go ahead…” Sam said sadly, as everyone nearby was fighting it openly by then.

He got the official report filed…pirates…and sent it in to be officially recorded as the reason he lost his ship. Then back to the Wharf for another, and good insurance this time, and when the salesman saw who he was …from the report on the news…he hinted that beams were better weapons than pulses, because they MIGHT have been less than prime weapons they sold cheap to get rid of. And Sam looked away hoping not to have to admit that they weren't running any ways, and he flew away in another new ship paid for up front, and with better software and weapons this time.

And before he left the salesman mentioned that if he owned a company then he would be getting big discounts on his ships and repairs, and Sam started looking into that the second his butt hit the seat.

Silarn Incorporated was already taken…by his father and grandfather…and so the best Sam could come up with was Silarn Mining Company. Nothing fancy, and perhaps not entirely accurate since he panned on having other ships as well. But by the end of the week it was his company and Clara was his first employee, and he hoped that with more rest and better equipment he wouldn’t need that discount anytime soon.

And that huge head start he had disappeared into what his grandfather called ‘experience training’.

      Chapter 5: Working Owner

Sam went back to work a better man. Less rushed more careful and better armed by a bunch. His ship had the best scanners and the escape pod more oxygen too, and when he got bothered again someone was going to pay for it for sure.

With his mapping from before he had several good spots to mine, and a few stations that even some of his friends haven't found yet. And he went back to regain his head start knowing full well he wouldn’t be first this time because of his own foolishness.

His father and grandfather ran the family business and made nearly a million a month now. That was what he’d aim for, a secure business that would make good money forever, and not just today.

He spent time searching for new places and mapping them and bringing in a few high class loads to replace what he spent so far. There were bigger ships too he might want later, and a million wasn’t going to cut it when it came to one of those.

He got a call from someone in his class and asked about a job, and Sam asked some questions about his specialty and finally agreed and gave him a courier ship to fly. S class and fast, it was armed but used mainly for escort missions or courier for high class business men and women. And another ‘arm’ of his business got started and another new employee.

And as his father walked into the main office one day he saw his dad, the original Sam Silarn sitting behind his massive Mahogany desk chuckling to himself and reading the accident report… again.

“He could have died you know…” he hinted as the old man just nodded but tossed the file noisily onto the desk.

“But he didn’t, and now he knows the truth about business in space...that you can die at any moment if your not careful, and he’s trying harder to think ahead, something necessary for sure.” He mentioned as his son agreed.

“We all had to learn the hard way, and I was sure he would too. Now he knows and will never make that mistake again.” He added as they both agreed. “ But come on…no insurance in a miner??” he asked and burst into laughter as even his son looked away and fought for control. Well he knew now and luckily he had enough to start over without going into debt…another lesson for another day.

And Sam III never knew that talk took place, but had he known he would not have been surprised because that’s just how his family was and had always been…and he thanked them silently for not rubbing his nose in it for the childish way his first ship got destroyed, and he went on to make sure it never happened again.

In his first month Adam, Sam’s new employe did pretty well. He got 3 contracts and hauled important documents once for 50,000 and two business people out to far flung stations and back for 100,000 each. Sam was a little surprised because in that month the ship was pretty much paid for, and he gave the young man a big thumbs up and said if he wanted to buy his own ship sometime and leave just let him know, but by being here he got to use the company name, and that name was slowly getting some respect in the home sectors, and Adam left him know he was doing OK here and wasn’t leaving anytime soon.

And Sam saw that having good employees was part of owning a prosperous business, and that was another lesson he learned from experience too.

And with more people out flying they found free things from time to time. Once Adam found 4 cargoes as he came out of a gate and gathered them up. 125,000 in equipment and resources, and Sam left him have it saying that was his choice and he started watching even more after that. Clara was now out traveling around more too and her maps got added to his and the companies in general, and Sam reminded her to watch that radar and not get caught of guard and she thanked him for worrying about her and went on to pay for her ship many times over.

And Silarn Mining got a good reputation and even security patrols waved and called over to say they were keeping an eye out, and Sam saw that doing the right thing and working hard had rewards that even he had not thought of at first.

      Chapter 6: The Security Wing

In a few weeks Clara asked if he was still hiring and Sam asked who wanted to know.

“I have a friend who’s looking for work. He has a Discoverer and does some small jobs here and there, but he knows we mine a lot and so asked if you were hiring Security yet.” She mentioned as Sam had to think about that one.

“Well I wasn’t thinking about it until now…what do you think he’d charge to escort miners out when we go to work?” He asked and she gave him the link to call him and after they talked it seemed that the guy was just afraid that if he kept going out alone he just plain wasn’t coming back, and Clara had a personal interest in seeing him stay safe it seemed.

“The good news is miners load up pretty quickly.” The guy said as Sam agreed.” So hiring me by the trip would be best for you, and if I join your company then you get to set the wages you think are fair.” He said and after some negotiations Jake Jackson joined the team and Sam got his first security ship to help keep trouble makers away.

“You keep going like you have been you’re going to be something big someday.” Jake mentioned as Sam smiled and thanked him for saying so. “Instead of me getting 15,000 once in a while doing a job, I can make more doing multiple trips with you and your miners, a little at a time. It’s a guaranteed wage for me and less dangerous too.” He admitted and Sam agreed, and since Clara left Sam know he was looking for work she got a new M class miner, armed of course, and her old one went to a new kid just out of school looking for some place to get a fresh start.

In less than a month Silarn Mining got 2 new people and their rating locally went up a bit more, and they got mentioned on the local news as a new company on its way up in the world and Sam felt that was good publicity for them and went back to work smiling pretty wide about that.

And just when he felt good abut things he got a call saying that he needed to see this…and when he got to where Adam was there sat a bigger ship, a Cerberus floating gently along beside the highway, and Sam pulled in along side and gave it a scan and no one was on board. It had some burn marks from weapons fire and no one, not even a dead body was on board. He called it in and when the local patrol got there they took the serial numbers and had it checked. It wasn’t local and the corporation that owned it had written it off as lost over a year ago. So Security asked their boss what to do and he gave it to Sam’s company for a finders fee.

“Put a pilot on it and it’s yours.” He got told and he slid over there himself and checked everything, even the air for toxins or some reason the crew had died, and after an hour it fired back up and he ordered his ship to follow and they went to the Equipment Dock for a thorough checking over and some new guns and shields.

There wasn’t anything obvious about why they were gone and even the Navy had someone check it and they found nothing either.

“Had to be slavers.” Was the official response and Sam got another pilot for his miner and added this new ship to his security detail, and his company got more serious and offensive than ever before.

But even as he flew it around he felt sad and worried about this. Why did someone take the crew and leave the ship floating? And why hadn't anyone else claimed it after all this time? The previous corporation thought it was destroyed and collected on the insurance and when they found out it was intact they didn’t want to know anymore about it. It was just too strange for him and he sometimes felt that he was being watched, as he flew along patrolling near his working miners.
