Cool Sam Silarn...the name goes on in X4

      Sam’s Troubles

      Chapter 1: Getting Started

Sam Silarn III was a nice young man that was slightly athletic and good looking. He just graduated from the Argon Pilots Academy and was walking down the line of ships in the Black Hole Sun Wharf.

He got a decent amount from his friends and family and so was pretty sure he could get his first ship today. So as he walked along the one salesman saw him and rushed out to make a sale and was quickly waved away.

“I don’t remotely know what I want yet so go away until I can decide.” He ordered as the man tried to say that with his help…but Sam gave him a look to freeze his blood… and the man left as quickly as he came.

Sam had worked with ships part time since his 14th birthday and he knew enough to know that he had basically 2 choices today. Either a small fast fighter with little to no firepower, or a tiny but new miner, something he could use to then get himself something better later on. Both S class… if he didn’t want payments.

If he looked at it logically then he really had one good choice and another side thing that he didn’t want to consider…so after looking up and down the line for a while he waved his arm and the sales man was right there all smiles.

“If I buy new and put say…half down… what can I get then?” he asked sadly, after deciding that nothing he saw was going to make him happy with the small amount he was carrying.

“And half would be??” The man hinted as Sam decided to go for broke.

“200,000…” he added as the man looked more than happy with that.

“For that amount quite a lot, both new and used.” He got told, and away they went first looking at good used ships, and they had a decent amount of those too, all nicely dented and shot up, and then to the terminal to see all the new ships at that price range.

“Fighters or miners or…?” He got asked again and try as he might Sam couldn’t decide because his dream ship was way beyond this trip today.

He looked all over the entire scale of things, flipping from mining ships to freighters to fighters, all S class and M too, since it depended on how you equipped them you might get a new medium ship for that down and payments that he wasn’t going to like either way. But fighters might look better, but having the smallest made, made sure you would be dead this month too and he wasn’t ready for that trip yet. And if he didn’t get some work fast after this deal, he’d be starving in less than a week, something his family would never let him forget.

“What about this one?” He asked and the man turned the screen around to see a gray ship, thin with big tail fins and a decent streamlined look.

“M class miner?” he asked as Sam nodded agreement and they went through the options list and he was surprised that 200,000 was more than enough to buy the frame and only the options would be going on his tab. Sam also knew another thing, with Xenons and Khaak around in many of the outer sectors many were afraid to go out alone, and so many stations were short on…well everything…and he knew he could pay off this debt in record time if he stayed safe and secure long enough.

“Standard mining beam and 2 medium turrets and medium shields?” the man asked as Sam nodded again, punching a few buttons as options started adding up. The total wasn’t bad at all and it carried a decent amount and he knew he’d have it paid for before he left the home sector for sure.

“And the down payment?” he asked, as Sam begrudgingly handed him nearly every credit chip he got today and the man checked the amount and a card came out of the machine with his account numbers on it and the order was sent, and the automated wharf crew started construction, as Sam stood by watching, and in less than an hour he owned a new ship, and he walked across the massive floor to the big gray thing and looked it over carefully. He had spent every credit he owned for this and it was bigger than he first thought, and didn’t look bad either and as he sat in the Command chair for the first time he got his first message…from the bank saying his first payment was due in 60 days… and Sam smiled his best smile and lifted off and out the big doors he went to look for work.

      Chapter 2: Hauling it in

Sam flew along getting used to this big thing and saw a few of his friends going for their first rides too. One called over saying he better hurry because he had his first job already and when he dropped his passenger off he’d be 100,000 ahead of Sam the first day.

But Sam just laughed at him, waved and closed the link, and as he went past 3 different stations they all were short on something and prices were pretty good too. So he turned from the trade lanes out into the asteroids along the edge of the system. They had been mined for ages but there were a lot of them left, and he got a load faster than he thought he would and started to see that his choice might not be as bad as he first thought.

Within the hour he had another 15,000 in his account and he went out for more. He owed the bank 150,000 more or less and so this was going to make that up pretty fast.

He made 3 trips that day and called home to tell his mom, dad and grandfather that he was doing OK, and they applauded his efforts.

“Always watch out when you’re working alone, sometimes good things come your way when you least expect it.” His grandfather reminded him as Sam agreed, while rolling his eyes at the free info he got every time they were talking. He had heard these things since he was old enough to remember, and even though his grandfather had done very well for himself Sam knew he would do things his own way and not be swayed by all this free advise.

But if he was right his first payment would be his last, and his credit account would shoot through the roof when the bank saw he was this stable and responsible. Getting a good credit rating was the key…and he was sure he was on the right track here.

Three days out, and he had a good amount in his account again, nearly getting back everything he had spent, and now he knew this debt wasn’t going to be a problem and when his first payment came due it would be his last for certain. And he had 50 days left so this wasn’t even anything to worry about.

As he stopped at the trading station for a hot meal he saw a few from his class there talking and waving and he sat down with them and they exchanged stories about their first week on their own. From finding cargos with tens of thousands floating for free, to getting chased out of a asteroid belt by pirates, they all got a good laugh at other peoples troubles. But luckily no one had died they knew of, and that was good too.

“I wish we all were so lucky…” One young man said as others nodded they understood. Even though their parents had the cash to send them to school it didn’t mean they could afford a ship on graduation day. There were probably half their class out there looking for work, and doing just about anything to get some. And they all felt sorry for them knowing that they were on their own like everyone else, but that they were having a harder time than most.

“Maybe we can help them later on.” Sam hinted and a few there smiled and nodded and it seemed like a plan.

Even his family had their ups and downs over time, but slowly they found their place as Private Security and now were more than a little well known.

But in this week Sam saw that mining was being ignored a lot now. Even in sectors pretty secure with patrols everywhere many thought it beneath them, or were too scared to try it, and his first ship proved to him that there was a need many were not even trying to fix. But he would…and with things working well for him now he just might put another ship to work soon…and still be able to pay of his debt ahead of time. All he needed was a little more of a push, and he decided to see what the other Black Hole Sun sectors had to offer too.

      Chapter 3: Stepping Up

He went through the gate for the first time and into a new sector. Now he made the same trip again, checking out stations and seeing what was needed and what they would pay. Just like his home sector things were slow, and patrols were everywhere, so things were a little tense. But he made a turn and went looking any ways, and after a short run to the outside of the station rows he found a smaller asteroid field… just one corner of the sector… but it held some really nice rocks.

A few high level ore asteroids that looked good, and there was one miner working on those too when he got there, so he moved on and a few miles further away he found three silicon asteroids, one really nice and two just average in ore density, and he grabbed a load of that quickly and made his first sale of the day, and another 60,000 went into his account and he smiled really wide now.

By mining these rocks he knew for a fact that he would be fine. Hell, he might buy another miner too, maybe just an S class to help someone out from his class, even 6-10 thousand a day beat the hell out of being unemployed, and he was sure they would agree. So without a thought he sent a early payment in and paid off his debt, and his Credit with the bank went up nicely and he got a message saying anything he would want in the future they hoped he’d consider them next time too, and he smiled and went back to replacing that amount in good time.

It took a week working some long hours but he was back at where his account was at its best. Now he could easily buy a second ship…especially if it was an S class for someone for a starter.

He left people know he was looking for a pilot, and within 2 days he got a call and he saw a young girl from his class that he had met before.

“Hi Sam, are you looking for a partner?” She asked as he informed her he wasn’t looking for that at all, but was thinking of hiring a second pilot for another small miner.

“Hey I didn’t mean it THAT way you moron.” She said sourly as he laughed and asked if she was looking for work. “Ya…I cant afford a ship of my own so I have to do something. I promised my mom I’d get out on my own and make something of myself... well that hasn't happened yet.” She said sadly, and he felt bad for her so he offered her the job. Fly his small miner for half…and she took it.

They met at the wharf and watched as the little miner was built and after a nice hug she ran down to take it out for the first time, and he went back to get his moving again too. He felt good helping out a friend, and now she could tell her parents that she was a working pilot…and he was sure that would mean the world to them.

And within the hour he saw a flash come across his screen and he forgot that since she was in his ship, every time she sold something he got the notice, and they made a nice 10,000 that trip, and he knew now she wasn’t going to be doing without food for a while at least, and his little ship started paying for itself and he wasn’t even in it.

      Chapter 4: Company Man

In a month the little ship paid for itself and Clara was never so happy. Sam left her know when it happened, and then gave her a little raise for staying and working for him after that. She looked so happy that she might cry, but agreed quickly to work for him at least until she could afford her own ship, and he agreed to that too.

He also knew that when people have a steady income they tend to spend it, and so he just smiled and left her go again as she saw better times ahead for herself and her parents, who were having some hard times of their own.

But Sam hadn't been idle all this time either and his account was approaching his first Million, and his smile started to show every time another good load got sold. He was told at home that no one can claim they are a success until they have at least 1 million in the bank, and at 20 Sam was rapidly approaching that magic number and his ego was starting to show.

He decided that just a few more loads especially silicon or God forbid…Nividium… and he would be the only one in his class to make that magical number…and first does mean something to others that might be getting close too.

So out he went, always further than everyone else, and he found some really good spots too and brought in good ores for sale, and after a long day he set up watching another load coming in…and fell asleep listening to the hum of the mining beam and the ‘ping, ping’ of the radar.

It might have been the beam shutting down when the load was full or the sudden change from ‘ping…ping’ to a sudden ‘whoop, whoop’ that made him wake up but all he saw was a flashing red icon of a missile and he barely got his hands on the controls when it hit.

“Engine 3 is down…” the computer said as Sam rushed to start the travel drive, which seemed to not want to work at the moment, and so he started the automatic distress beacon hoping that a patrol was close by. But as he got up to speed another alarm went off and he started to swear and he sat back and pulled in his feet as the cocoon formed around him and his ship was torn in two, which thankfully he would be spared watching.

The ship was torn into pieces and the raiders looted whatever they could get and left , laughing to themselves that the fool didn’t even have his turrets activated, and Sam heard it too and felt like crying. He had gotten sloppy and in a hurry, and now he might well die out here…but his luck was holding out, at least a little and as his oxygen level made it to half way he felt a jerk and his escape pod went on board a M class ship and they flew him back to civilization to make his official report.

“Raiders huh?” the Naval Captain asked as Sam agreed saying they knew he was right there in a pod and laughed at him and looted his ship and flew away before the Navy got there, and Sam filled out all the forms they asked of him and found out he made 1 more TINY mistake. He was running for more than a month…without insurance of any kind… as even the officer looked away to keep from laughing in his face.

“I know… go ahead…” Sam said sadly, as everyone nearby was fighting it openly by then.

He got the official report filed…pirates…and sent it in to be officially recorded as the reason he lost his ship. Then back to the Wharf for another, and good insurance this time, and when the salesman saw who he was …from the report on the news…he hinted that beams were better weapons than pulses, because they MIGHT have been less than prime weapons they sold cheap to get rid of. And Sam looked away hoping not to have to admit that they weren't running any ways, and he flew away in another new ship paid for up front, and with better software and weapons this time.

And before he left the salesman mentioned that if he owned a company then he would be getting big discounts on his ships and repairs, and Sam started looking into that the second his butt hit the seat.

Silarn Incorporated was already taken…by his father and grandfather…and so the best Sam could come up with was Silarn Mining Company. Nothing fancy, and perhaps not entirely accurate since he panned on having other ships as well. But by the end of the week it was his company and Clara was his first employee, and he hoped that with more rest and better equipment he wouldn’t need that discount anytime soon.

And that huge head start he had disappeared into what his grandfather called ‘experience training’.

      Chapter 5: Working Owner

Sam went back to work a better man. Less rushed more careful and better armed by a bunch. His ship had the best scanners and the escape pod more oxygen too, and when he got bothered again someone was going to pay for it for sure.

With his mapping from before he had several good spots to mine, and a few stations that even some of his friends haven't found yet. And he went back to regain his head start knowing full well he wouldn’t be first this time because of his own foolishness.

His father and grandfather ran the family business and made nearly a million a month now. That was what he’d aim for, a secure business that would make good money forever, and not just today.

He spent time searching for new places and mapping them and bringing in a few high class loads to replace what he spent so far. There were bigger ships too he might want later, and a million wasn’t going to cut it when it came to one of those.

He got a call from someone in his class and asked about a job, and Sam asked some questions about his specialty and finally agreed and gave him a courier ship to fly. S class and fast, it was armed but used mainly for escort missions or courier for high class business men and women. And another ‘arm’ of his business got started and another new employee.

And as his father walked into the main office one day he saw his dad, the original Sam Silarn sitting behind his massive Mahogany desk chuckling to himself and reading the accident report… again.

“He could have died you know…” he hinted as the old man just nodded but tossed the file noisily onto the desk.

“But he didn’t, and now he knows the truth about business in space...that you can die at any moment if your not careful, and he’s trying harder to think ahead, something necessary for sure.” He mentioned as his son agreed.

“We all had to learn the hard way, and I was sure he would too. Now he knows and will never make that mistake again.” He added as they both agreed. “ But come on…no insurance in a miner??” he asked and burst into laughter as even his son looked away and fought for control. Well he knew now and luckily he had enough to start over without going into debt…another lesson for another day.

And Sam III never knew that talk took place, but had he known he would not have been surprised because that’s just how his family was and had always been…and he thanked them silently for not rubbing his nose in it for the childish way his first ship got destroyed, and he went on to make sure it never happened again.

In his first month Adam, Sam’s new employe did pretty well. He got 3 contracts and hauled important documents once for 50,000 and two business people out to far flung stations and back for 100,000 each. Sam was a little surprised because in that month the ship was pretty much paid for, and he gave the young man a big thumbs up and said if he wanted to buy his own ship sometime and leave just let him know, but by being here he got to use the company name, and that name was slowly getting some respect in the home sectors, and Adam left him know he was doing OK here and wasn’t leaving anytime soon.

And Sam saw that having good employees was part of owning a prosperous business, and that was another lesson he learned from experience too.

And with more people out flying they found free things from time to time. Once Adam found 4 cargoes as he came out of a gate and gathered them up. 125,000 in equipment and resources, and Sam left him have it saying that was his choice and he started watching even more after that. Clara was now out traveling around more too and her maps got added to his and the companies in general, and Sam reminded her to watch that radar and not get caught of guard and she thanked him for worrying about her and went on to pay for her ship many times over.

And Silarn Mining got a good reputation and even security patrols waved and called over to say they were keeping an eye out, and Sam saw that doing the right thing and working hard had rewards that even he had not thought of at first.

      Chapter 6: The Security Wing

In a few weeks Clara asked if he was still hiring and Sam asked who wanted to know.

“I have a friend who’s looking for work. He has a Discoverer and does some small jobs here and there, but he knows we mine a lot and so asked if you were hiring Security yet.” She mentioned as Sam had to think about that one.

“Well I wasn’t thinking about it until now…what do you think he’d charge to escort miners out when we go to work?” He asked and she gave him the link to call him and after they talked it seemed that the guy was just afraid that if he kept going out alone he just plain wasn’t coming back, and Clara had a personal interest in seeing him stay safe it seemed.

“The good news is miners load up pretty quickly.” The guy said as Sam agreed.” So hiring me by the trip would be best for you, and if I join your company then you get to set the wages you think are fair.” He said and after some negotiations Jake Jackson joined the team and Sam got his first security ship to help keep trouble makers away.

“You keep going like you have been you’re going to be something big someday.” Jake mentioned as Sam smiled and thanked him for saying so. “Instead of me getting 15,000 once in a while doing a job, I can make more doing multiple trips with you and your miners, a little at a time. It’s a guaranteed wage for me and less dangerous too.” He admitted and Sam agreed, and since Clara left Sam know he was looking for work she got a new M class miner, armed of course, and her old one went to a new kid just out of school looking for some place to get a fresh start.

In less than a month Silarn Mining got 2 new people and their rating locally went up a bit more, and they got mentioned on the local news as a new company on its way up in the world and Sam felt that was good publicity for them and went back to work smiling pretty wide about that.

And just when he felt good abut things he got a call saying that he needed to see this…and when he got to where Adam was there sat a bigger ship, a Cerberus floating gently along beside the highway, and Sam pulled in along side and gave it a scan and no one was on board. It had some burn marks from weapons fire and no one, not even a dead body was on board. He called it in and when the local patrol got there they took the serial numbers and had it checked. It wasn’t local and the corporation that owned it had written it off as lost over a year ago. So Security asked their boss what to do and he gave it to Sam’s company for a finders fee.

“Put a pilot on it and it’s yours.” He got told and he slid over there himself and checked everything, even the air for toxins or some reason the crew had died, and after an hour it fired back up and he ordered his ship to follow and they went to the Equipment Dock for a thorough checking over and some new guns and shields.

There wasn’t anything obvious about why they were gone and even the Navy had someone check it and they found nothing either.

“Had to be slavers.” Was the official response and Sam got another pilot for his miner and added this new ship to his security detail, and his company got more serious and offensive than ever before.

But even as he flew it around he felt sad and worried about this. Why did someone take the crew and leave the ship floating? And why hadn't anyone else claimed it after all this time? The previous corporation thought it was destroyed and collected on the insurance and when they found out it was intact they didn’t want to know anymore about it. It was just too strange for him and he sometimes felt that he was being watched, as he flew along patrolling near his working miners.

      Chapter 7: Unclear Clarification

So hard was his thought of being watched that he silently went to a friend and asked them to check the ship, for every scanning and video device known to Humans. He got paid nicely for it too and after a day he called Sam in to give him the results.

“So there are devices on board?” he asked as the man nodded there were.

“Its weird, I’ve been in this business for many years and I thought I’ve seen it all…but the ones I found were high tech and brand new and they weren't there to watch you, they were scientific equipment to measure odd magnetic pulses and graviton shifts. This was a serious science ship before this, that much is for certain.” He added as Sam was even more curious than before.

“And who would have access to those types of equipment?” Sam asked as the door to the office opened and a high ranking military man walked in while his two guards stood watch outside.

“We would…” he said as Sam nodded that it was starting to make sense now, if the military used this in the past then high tech equipment would fit to his thoughts just fine.

“As soon as I started scanning the equipment this officer called. It was like he knew what was happening even while I was on board.” The tester said as the officer agreed to that immediately.

“We gave you a ship Silarn...let it go.” He said very seriously as Sam just couldn’t stop just yet.

“Was there a crew on board when the tests were being done?” Sam, asked as the man looked conflicted but then nodded there were.” Then where are they now? Not even a body to send to their families…” Sam went on, as the man spun him around and looked deep into his eyes, and his stare was not comforting a bit.

“Stop your investigation and be grateful we just gave you a warning this time. Now go back to your little mining company and let the military worry about this job.” He said and walked out as fast as he had come.

“I think we’re lucky this is all they did, its obvious that the military was working on something that got away from them.” Sam heard as he looked the man over one more time before leaving the room.

“If those scanners weren't watching me what were they made to scan?” he asked over his shoulder as the man looked seriously worried.

“Black holes and anomalies…” he whispered and waved Sam away and he went home to think about this as his home, company and employees all went on the military’s watch list.

So the military had science vessels out there checking for anomalies that might be a threat…and they obviously found one this time…that wasn’t exactly comforting to know but Sam knew that he was being watched and that the equipment that was on board seemed to disappear when he stopped at an Equipment Dock for repairs.

He had no choice but to let it go…for now…because if he didn’t he might be the next one to disappear.

So Sam decided that they might have found a anomaly to another sector of space and maybe even new people, certainly worth protecting for sure. And with that more happy thought in mind he went on about his business and tried not to consider the alternative.

      Chapter 8: Respect

By now Sam’s business was officially a year old, and with 5 ships in it he was considered an up and coming young businessman in Argon space.

They held a dinner every year for new businesses and he got invited for the first time. They kept track of his accomplishments and his employee roster too and while several others had started new businesses too he was just an employee or two ahead for the moment.

He still had 3 miners working and his Cerberus and one fighter, now out of the little Discoverer and into a Kestrel Vanguard, a big improvement for sure.

They killed a few Xenon between them and got bounties for those, and helped catch a pirate or two trying to steal from the miners. So their reputation was going up slowly and the people at the dinner made sure he knew they were looking for good things from him in the future, and he smiled and said he’d do his best.

Of course his father was there and his grandfather…a rarity he was told. But they bragged about their company still going strong after all these years and then smiled when Sam got mentioned and the grandfather would laugh and say ‘of course…he’s a Silarn!’ and many would laugh.

And after a little while the three Silarn men were seen standing by the drink table talking, and many there smiled that another generation was watching over Argon once more.

“Little Sam isn’t dating is he?” One man asked his father who chuckled saying that he wasn’t sure they could call him ‘little Sam ’ to his face much longer. “Well he’s the third generation, so calling him ‘The Third’ seems stuffy don’t you think?”

“We all know who’s who.” Sam Jr. said all smiles.” So just Sam is fine.”

“Well I have a daughter that’s into mining too and I thought they might make a good fit.” The man hinted as Sam Jr. smiled saying he wasn’t getting involved in his son’s dating life that was up to him, and the man agreed…but snuck over there to drop a hint or two while he had the chance, and Sam III smiled that he was being noticed for something like this.

“Send her over and I’ll offer her a job…if she’s really pretty maybe two jobs…” Sam hinted and they both laughed and the man went away a little happier that he tried at least.

“I thought maybe he and that young girl that mines for him..” Sam Senior hinted as his son just laughed, it wasn’t happening as far as he knew, but then he really wasn’t trying to keep track.

“Lets not get involved.” He said as the older man just chuckled , but getting involved was fun, and he did like his fun these days.

So when he got the chance he dropped a few hints here and there, and eventually they made it back to the right people, and Sam knew he was being played and hoped that Clara knew it too and that when he was ready he’d find someone nice and good looking, and his family wouldn’t have a thing to do about it.

And besides…when a man asks a woman to be his bride its agreed to immediately that he ahs a place for them to live…and Sam was still living out of his ship for the moment. But he’d keep an eye out and sooner rather than later he’d come up with something.

But for now he went on with his everyday life, and his employees talked well of him and more than one young woman looked his way, and his dating habits got more varied as that happened too but he still wouldn’t say one way or the other, and soon found himself just enjoying his single life while others either chuckled about it, or fumed that he wouldn’t choose.

Got this finished so adding more now, has 17 chapters all together so enjoy.

Chapter 9: Charles Station, Home broken Home

Sam was on a convoy escort job into a new sector about a month later when he looked out to see a big wreck off to the side and asked the computer what it was.

“Before the Xenon Conflict it was called Charles Station, a small Argon complex made by a man and his family to mine and make energy cells. But the Xenon destroyed it and his entire family perished.” She said as Sam felt bad about that, but from here it didn’t look ‘destroyed’ at all, shot up for sure and there were some holes in it, but destroyed…it him at least…meant gone completely, and it was far from that.

“No one owns it then?” he asked as she had to take time to check, and it seemed people avoided it because it was ‘cursed’ or something, and it belonged to no one at the moment. “See what it would take to get it into my name.” He offered as she reminded him he was far, far from rich enough to build a station yet, and he remined her that he rented a room right now to sleep in and that wasn’t cheap so owning even one pressurized room would start to save him money, and as illogical as that sounded she did as asked and after some discussion between him and the Teladi that owned the sector he made them see that slowly fixing up a station looked better…and more Profitable…then letting some old wreck just sit there.

And of course the offer of 100,000 credits for ownership didn’t hurt either and that day he owned a wreck and was told immediately that it would take tens of million to just repair what had been done to it in the past.

“It’s a project…” he mentioned as he flew to it and got a close look. In places you could see right into machinery and consoles inside and one pressurized door was gone, blasted clear off its hinges by a blast. The control room was, for all purposes gone, and many areas took heavy hits, but there was a good sized section that looked basically untouched.

“As I thought, with something this big not every sector took damage.” He remarked and scanned and got a full layout of the station, and to his pleasure and surprise the untouched area was rooms for crew and a common area where they sat and talked or watched entertainment channels in the past.

“May I suggest you drop off Repair Drones with orders to seal this area and begin any repairs they can? Getting some emergency power certainly will be necessary.” The computer hinted, and Sam agreed and he sent over all he had on board…4.. And left them begin a very long process of just getting that area sealed off and power and life support restarted.

“ 4 down and only a thousand to go..” Sam hinted and laughed and away he went for a few days until he got some jobs done and bought some more drones to drop off.

A week later and 6 more drones were working and he saw tiny improvements. Some power was restored, but only minimal and only to this small part. One solar array was partially there and was hooked back up to this part of the grid. Now the drones had a place to recharge and that helped a lot. And now emergency lights were seen in some rooms as work went on.

He also found that like any good war many stations were hit and destroyed, and after some research he found a few in the same sector and ‘salvaged’ some parts off them for his.

Within a month power was fully restored to this area, and he moved in to see that while it worked it needed some cleaning badly, and so he bought some small cleaning/maintenance bots and they went to work on that while his 10 repair bots worked on other areas now and the one door that was blown off it hinges was back on and sealed, and a hallway and a few other rooms in it became usable again.

If he was careful and worked hard at it the station could be working and making a profit again in a few years, he was told, but he remarked to many that he owned his own…very big…house now and rent there was really cheap, and two other pilots left the Trading Station for a place to sleep that didn’t cost them 5000 a week for nothing but a bunk bed and a light.

And people just cant stand to see things out of place or laying around, and so after moving in he started picking up after the junk that was laying everywhere and his friends helped, and some things too large for the drones got moved and even tossed out an airlock, and repairs and improvements got underway again.

      Chapter 10: Investment pays off

Sam found out that everything for manufacturing of Energy Cells was still there. Some parts needed replaced and some repaired but if he got more power to use he slowly could sell his surplus to help pay for the repairs. So he personally went out looking and after a while found another station in another sector that the Xenon destroyed and he got a full solar panel from that one for cheap, and his stations power needs were fixed immediately after it got mounted and a wave of repair drones found it.

Within 6 months of moving in his first ecells came off the line…very slowly…but they did. He got enough for his own use and even sold a few to others he knew, but there was still a lot of work to do and after doing a mission to carry someone to another station he bought 10 more drones and ordered them to work on this new area.

And after that, days later actually, his energy cell production went up considerably, and he posted on the Trading Station console that he was selling again, and a few buyers came by to remind him of something important…he only had 1 docking bay to use and even his renters used up part of that… and he sighed heavily and went about repairing another one on the opposite side, and slowly he got enough cash from sales to help pay for the repairs.

But his hard work wasn’t going unnoticed. His father and grandfather were watching from the shadows, and after some good laughing that first week, now they smiled more and nodded approvingly as little things got better.

And one day when Sam came home from a mission there was a construction ship there and he was quick to tell them he hadn't called for one.

“This is Silarn Station right? We got an order to add an economy dock to the station, and we’re almost done.” He got told as he saw that it would certainly help and so he agreed. But what surprised him most was that it was prepaid, and his father had done it. “See you next time.” The Captain of the ship said as it moved away and Sam had a working station, possibly for the first time as ships docked to buy his Energy Cells within minutes of getting it finished, and he smiled a lot that day and sent a nice thank you home to his family too for watching out for him.

And not only his Family, since he was mentioned as an up and coming young businessman, now many like him kept looking in his direction from time to time, trying to keep up or get ahead. But seeing him throwing money into a wreck of an old station made many feel happy. It would take years to repair it, but when his first Energy Cells came off the line less than a year later, they saw that maybe he wasn’t such a fool after all.

All the estimates of repair costs and time needed went out the window, and even his Father and Grandfather got in on the act, and he got a new dock which he desperately needed. Now he was making cash for the rest of his repairs right there, and his personal account started back up from the big dip it took when he bought the station and started throwing everything into it.

Now the name Silarn got a new business added to it, and his family started buying from him too, and he got his first full time contract that was soon followed by others once they saw he was putting out product full time now.

Chapter 11: Targeted…in more Ways than One

But while his reputation went up with many, his competition wasn’t too happy with his quick improvement. One day his station nearly came to a halt, and when they checked everything they found a hacker chip had been installed into one console. This pissed him off more than he would even admit, because this showed that someone wanted him stopped badly enough to come themselves…or send someone to do it …right to his station. And since very few of the stations security cameras were working they got away with it, and his production ground to a haul for an entire day.

But his dad left him know that this wasn’t unusual, as a matter of fact many people hire someone to mess with their competitors, and this just meant that he was becoming a threat to the stations close by that sold similar things and that he could plan on it happening again someday.

Sabotage…something Sam never thought he’d need to worry about…or at least this soon. And so he put 4 repair drones onto repairing the cameras that watched these things and hired a worker just to watch over the security office and set off alarms when this was ever tried again. And since he moved around doing many different types of work Sam hired an office manager to run the place, and then he didn’t need to be there everyday himself, and to his surprise production went up and the station started pulling in even more cash.

Sam was a decent manager in his own right, but ships were his thing, and he would never be really happy without them and so this was the best of both worlds. His own station turning a profit, and ships to play with when he liked, and his Family saw that after a short time he was gaining maturity by leaps and bounds and his business showed it. He offered his workers free rooms in the station and most took the offer happily, and he added two more small miners to bring in materials and even some surplus to sell, and his little company was seen gaining on others even older but less organized.

And in less than 2 years his business was a success, and his company moved up the ranks of the business world and became a true supplier that even other stations agreed was well run. And when the next business dinner time came he got a award for his hard work, and a rousing round of applause from everyone there…and Sam knew he had officially made it in the business world that day.

One hurtle over with and a million more to go…but he didn’t know that…but the Universe has a way of making even the most egocentric a little humble from time to time, and with the award offers of a different type started coming in. It seemed young businessmen get seen differently than young fools just trying to make it on their own. And Sam was impressed with how many older business owners had daughters that seemed to wait on someone successful to let themselves be known.

This type of thing had happened to him once before, but only once, and it was nice and all being chased by some great looking ladies, but Sam always declared he wasn’t ready for a serious relationship yet, and many took it the wrong way and stormed away leaving him standing smiling and watching them go.

“He was quite rude…” Sam Senior heard from a friend as he all but laughed in the mans face.

“If that’s what he says then its not her fault for not convincing him.” He offered… to help the man feel better if nothing else. “Give him some time and try again. If she really likes him she will want to any ways, if not, don’t push it they’ll turn on you later for it.” He hinted as the man agreed slowly and went away as he sent a message saying that being rude hurt feelings of people you might want as allies someday in the future, and young Sam saw that politics , in some small way, was sneaking up on him and his business now that he was moderately successful.

And so Sam went on a few dates, some that lasted until the next day too, and while he admitted it was all fun, some pushed hard to get him to commit to them in a serious relationship…and he just wouldn’t do it yet. And so the word got out that he was a ‘player’ that used women and never got serious, and slowly , one after another, less came around to see him after a while.

But that didn’t scare him a bit, because what started as a rush for riches was slowly becoming a game of fun and excitement, and THAT he approved of, and only a few young women stayed behind and went on dates after that, and slowly Sam saw one that was having a great time with him…and never pushed him to commit to her or anyone else. As a matter of fact she seemed quite happy being there just for fun, and Charlotte Clare started getting his attention far more than any other had until now.

      Chapter 12: Seriously…Fun

Charlottes father owned a couple of stations in Black Hole Sun and she and her family certainly weren’t in need of any cash. But she loved excitement and being with him when they went out helped satisfy that need. She often said that owning a ship and seeing new places and doing new things must be a dream for someone like him…and he agreed wholeheartedly.

She seemed to understand him more than anyone else, and slowly he found that when she wasn’t around for a couple weeks at a time that he really missed her.

She was blond with short hair barely touching her shoulders but always perfectly kept and managed. She had a nice figure but not excessive in any part or place, and the sweetest baby face that he had ever seen, and the attraction was off the scale as far as he was concerned, and he refused to admit it for a while , while others smiled and waited for him to give in.

And even he knew it was just a matter of time, but he didn’t have the nest egg laid back he always wanted to have before hand, and so he started doing new things and looking for jobs that paid more, because Nature was surely sneaking up on him now and he couldn’t fight it forever.

And Charlotte and her friends weren’t stupid, she knew what he was thinking and she approved and even mentioned to her father that she found someone special, and he smiled wider knowing she finally settled on someone after all this time.

And so the tables were set, with Sam running raged looking for ways to gather cash quickly, and Charlotte and her entire Family waiting on him to decide that he was ready, and she even had some plans made ahead of time for their wedding…so he wasn’t getting away no matter what.

After bringing in a few loads of high grade Ore Sam took a break to get something hot to eat. He sat there thinking and checking his stocks when some of his people came in and waved and he offered to eat lunch with them. They did sit and when he got asked when he was finally going to pop the question he just smiled and said ‘soon’ and everyone got a good laugh at him for still being stubborn.

“I need a better start before bringing in someone else into my family.” He admitted while everyone had their own idea about that.

“She really loves you and I know for a fact her Family has already approved the wedding.” He heard as Clara said she heard her talking with some of her friends a few days ago. ”I don’t think money is worth holding back your future plans for.” She hinted as Sam just smiled and agreed but he just wasn’t ready yet, but if he worked hard maybe in a few more months, as everyone laughed at him.

“If you travel into some other areas you can always Crystal Mine there…there just aren't any in these home sectors anymore.” He heard as he admitted he never had done that and asked if he needed a good miner for that and got told no. “They form on asteroids of certain types. They literally grow on them like mold or something and they come in many different colors. My brother got a few after searching for a week and bought himself a new fighter with it. Seems some go really high, the lowest around 1000 credits for a single chip, and the average crystal has up to 12 chips worth when you break them up.” He heard and he thought that sounded pretty good, 12000 credits for one small crystal, if you can find them.

“And he didn’t mention where he finally found some?” Sam hinted as everyone there turned to look at the man and after a second he cleared his throat saying he couldn’t say…for sure…but he heard he was searching North of Black Hole Sun…going towards Argon Prime, and Sam thanked him for the hint and he got asked if they were invited for the wedding and he laughed and agreed, as he jumped up ,paid for his lunch and was gone shortly after.

“I’m amazed he hasn’t mined crystals yet, I think we all got a few from time to time.” Got mentioned as they all laughed, but Sam had been so busy with the station he just overlooked the biggest money in mining, until today.

“I wish him well, he’s a great Boss.” Clara added as everyone agreed and they toasted to his happiness with their coffee and ate and went back to work.

Sam went through Black Hole Sun and out going North. He stopped at each sector and scanned asteroids and finally found one shining crystal growing on one rock that was twisting and turning as it rolled through space. He worked to get into just the right spot then opened fire and after 3 tries the crystal exploded into tiny bits that he beamed in. He checked his inventory and found 13000 worth of crystals so not bad for a start, and he activated his scanner and as he saw the different types of ore there he saw a few in the distance that sparkled, and he ran to see.

It was a large asteroid field and he stayed there all day until he felt he would fall asleep…and he learned the hard way about that… so he went home and docked and got some rest, then went to the Traders corner to sell his wares. In 5 hours steady mining he figured he better have 40000 at least, but when they got scanned and sold his total was just over 1 million credits and his face lit up brightly.

“I see you haven't done this before…” Got mentioned as Sam agreed. “ There are different colors, purple is the cheapest and easiest to find, then they slowly change color towards white, or clear, that’s a crystal to watch for since it’s the most expensive with one tiny chip selling for around 200,000 credits. But they are exceedingly rare.” He learned as he thanked the man and went back to work and his nest egg just got quite a bit bigger fast.

      Chapter 13: Truth in Mining

He made it a thing for a week solid, and after seeing him getting really serious no one stepped up to ask him to slow down. His account skyrocketed, and all his stations bills were paid in full soon after.

Now it was all profit, and he even added a second storage facility to the station for future use, and a second M class freighter for deliveries. And everyone watching him…and there were a few…knew that this was his last great attempt to keep busy and stay single, but that time was against him even in this.

And on his weekends Charlotte made sure he knew her feelings, and that she would be there for him whatever he chose, and he agreed saying it wouldn’t be long now, and she always just laughed and called him a coward for being afraid of a little girl like her.

But that’s just the way it was, and with him running himself raged and her going right ahead getting her wedding planned, no one could foresee the troubles that were on the way, and that his new ship would play a big part in it before it was over.

Sam went from area to area now looking for crystals and he even heard they grow back…after some time…because a ‘root’ stayed behind hidden in cracks within the asteroids. That gave him even more hope…infinite amounts of crystals to mine… and he hired a new pilot and gave him a small miner with a beam weapon on it and send hm out mining too.

Things were going pretty well when he noticed a Xenon near by and watched it carefully for a while. It made no serious attempts to stop him and finally left the area. Strange for a Xenon not to attack on sight, and he mentioned it to his father when next they talked.

“They’re machines that have high intelligence.” He said as Sam nodded agreement,” maybe its some evolution they are going through, someday we might even talk to them like normal people.” He hinted as Sam looked surprised that might even be possible in the future. But that was then and as he kept working he watched, and found he too was being watched, and it unnerved him a bit to think that he was worth this attention.

But he wasn’t the only one that noticed, and Argon patrols seemed close by at nearly every minute of the day, and Sam started wondering what the Hell was really going on, and why no one told him about it.

“It’s their job after all…” His grandfather added as Sam reminded him that each sector was very large and that guarding him was leaving many others open to attack. “I’ll look into it.” Was all he got told and away he went as Sam just sighed heavily and went back working, even though his ideal nest egg had been surpassed days ago it just wasn’t in him to give up without a fight.

“If it’s not Xenons it this damned marriage thing…I cant even get a good nights sleep anymore.” He whispered but he knew it was all in his head, well the sleep thing any ways, but this Xenon thing was real and he decided that he needed to know why and when the next Xenon appeared not 20 miles away he turned and ran towards it and only then did it attack and get destroyed.

“I’m getting real tired being some ones entertainment.” Sam grumbled and gathered the loot and went back to searching for more crystals, and found a really good silicon asteroid and one of his miners was on that in minutes. His scanning and searching found him more asteroids than his team could mine and so another M class miner got added, and his little company started taking their fair share of profits from all the Black Hole Sun sectors and he allowed them to start selling a few sectors further away too.

Chapter 14: Intelligence, Military and otherwise

“He got better armed and killed the last 2 scouts that were watching him.” Got reported as the Sector Commander nodded seriously. The Xenon knew the ID number of that ship, and it had drifted away from them when they disabled it months ago, so maybe they thought it had better AI than other Argon ships, who knows? But it was clear they were watching ships longer and scanning more before attacking now. Not really a bad thing, but a bother…since no one knew why exactly.

“Continue watching him, there’s got to be a reason for all this.” The young officer got told and away he went to pass on the latest orders.

But after weeks of watching and scanning one thing became clear…their objectives were, in most cases…Science Vessels. They scanned and watched a lot of ships but lost interest in regular miners and patrol ships quickly. Now they were watching for special vessels and Sam just happened to own one, all be it not active at the moment.

The majority of his scanners and science equipment was taken off some time ago when he complained about being watched, and he was left to return to his daily life with his new ship….but the Xenons never forgot it… and were around almost daily now. What will happen when he keeps killing them on sight? Will they attempt to capture it again, or attempt communications maybe for the first time? No one knew no matter how high up in the Government you ask, but Sam was the bait for some new Time, or new relations between Argon and the Xenon, for better or for worse, and even he didn’t know how many scanning devices were still on board, and that with his searching 2 more anomalies had been spotted as he flew by. And so long as this new procedure kept showing results no one was going to tell him either.

But the Xenons certainly did have a reason to watch him, and many others. The previous crew had found a small eddy and without thinking flew in to see where it went.

Right into the art of Xenon Central, their Prime Sector, and the heart of their own research and development.

They were originally made by Argon as slave builders for long term colonization. But one small mistake in their code when a new generation was built and they became the militant civilization they were today. One mistake… a single line missing or a single word changed… and then multiplied thousands of times after, and a new group is born.

But they are nothing if not enthusiastic about their job, which now seems to just be to build newer and better Xenon…and when they looked back on the original program and the one many use today, something doesn’t quite fit, and even they wanted to know what the problem was. But since they had no way of knowing which program was right they just went on, but a few specialized researchers started wondering if a sample of the original code might be found on some Argon ship, and Science vessels had more info about them than any other, and so the reason for their sudden interest in them as a whole.

The Human crew was captured and turned into just another research project, but it didn’t help the Xenon to learn what they needed to know, since verbal communications had never been used or even invented in their civilization. They were machines and code was their language and they transmitted it between them and nothing more. So simplistic was this that orders could be given once…in a generation…and never repeated again. And so even the Argon and other races never heard them speak, in any form, because it just wasn’t necessary to them.

But this one ship mentioned the Xenon from the past, but not their original programing. Now it was their only link to their past, and maybe their future, and they needed that information more than any other in their memories and so no matter how many got destroyed they would continue to watch and scan, until someday they found what they wanted to know.

      Chapter 15: Sam’s Monotony…Universe Wide

Sam knew very little about the Xenon except for rumors and of course the occasional Special about them on the Channels. But he knew enough to stay back when their were a few together but lately there had only been one, yes just like that one there, 5 miles out pretending to hide behind an asteroid while Sam mined. It was starting to get to him and so he targeted it and called out asking ‘what the Hell do you want?’ and of course got no response at all.

“I must be going nuts… they never talk..” He whispered but then got an idea. They were machines and as such didn’t have voices that anyone knew of, so he opened a link to the little ship and asked his computer to link up with it, and it refused, saying it could easily over ride its programing and capture the ship if they did that.

“They wont talk to me or any Argon,” Sam mentioned and was quickly agreed with, “ but another machine…maybe.” He hinted as things got really quiet for a minute then a squeaky, rattling sound came over the speakers and the computer lowered the sound level accordingly.

“Its putting out a steady carrier wave, probably sending scans back to its base.” He heard as he agreed.

“Inject this into the wave…tell me what you want and I’ll help…” he said, and even his computer seemed reluctant for a while, but it did it and the little fighter looked shocked as it turned and ran quickly away.

“Think it understood?” Sam asked as his computer laughed saying that it would be like an Argon hearing Paranid language for the first time, and he agreed and went back to work.

But the Xenon HAD heard Paranid language and Argon and every major civilization, and a few they didn’t even know about yet. To see a message injected especially for them was...unheard of…and the little courier ran back to report it and to stay away from this odd Argon who wasn’t afraid of it at all.

It took days of deciphering and testing but the Mothership in charge of the area got it done and seemed surprised the message was not a threat. It had to consider that some Humans were more advanced than others, and as such wanted to know…to seek knowledge from all sources…something the Xenons understood very well. Knowledge gives one meaning and through it a better future, and now the old Masters were catching up to them and asked… peacefully for once…what they wanted from them. It was a shock to the normal monotonous life of a Xenon Mothership because nothing had changed in centuries. But now….and it decided that it might be worthwhile to see…and the same little ship got a modified program and went out looking for Cerberus , serial number S13467, and the odd Master it had on board, to have a little chat.

It took 3 days to find him again and the little ship knew it was being watched by other Argon ships as well. Maybe it had been a well laid plan from the start? Only time would tell, and when Sam got told his little ‘pet’ was back he turned on his communications device and in a minute got a message, to his and even his computers surprise.

“Cerberus S13467…we seek the Origin, the First Program of the Xenon that Humans gave us long ago…do you have it?” It asked as even Sam was speechless, but the original program was made to start their journey as Terraformers, and it worked well for centuries until some oddity changed it somewhere, and after a few seconds researching he found a copy of it in a museum on Argon Prime and sent a copy over as several military vessels ran in screaming for him to stop. But the little fighter got it in time and disappeared into the asteroid belt as Sam asked why they were so upset.

“Communicating with the enemy is a Capital Offense!” he got told and they asked what he sent across and he told them as eyes popped all over the screen.

“They lost their original program and were using some half assed made up thing until now, maybe an evolution of some kind made them want to know again who they originally were, who knows? But it was peaceful and asking nicely, and I saw no reason not to give it back to them since that time was better than things have been for centuries since.” Sam mentioned and was quickly told that decision wasn’t up to him and he asked why not, since no one else had the nerve to try.

“If this leads to a new Xenon War the responsibility will fall directly on your shoulders.” He got told and he felt like the Universe was sitting on his head after that but he said that if this was a mistake he would take responsibility for it then, and he got boarded and taken away and the message made it back to the Mothership and it was surprised it was this easy, and that Humans might not be their enemy after all, if this was true.

“They truly were…the Creators….” It thought and every war like process going on in her area stopped and her people returned to her side and the new knowledge was exchanged through out, and their base program was replaced with the original and a new time for the local Xenon colony started that day.

      Chapter 16: Sam’s Trial

The Military watched carefully and after a few days not a single Xenon was seen. They were, according to scouts, back inside their Core Sector just sitting there, and to everyone watching it appeared they were having a meeting for some reason.

“It’s a prelude to an attack..” Some said while others didn’t agree, saying they showed no signs of attacking anyone, and the scans the got showed their weapons weren't even online.

The Mothership was a mobile shipyard and the center of their technology and sectors they claimed and its was well made, huge and armed to the teeth, and if that started moving then it would take an entire fleet to stop it, if they could.

But it made no such move and as Military Intelligence watched it carefully, Sam Silarn got dragged into a military Court to face charges of Treason for what he had done.

It was a sober time for him and his family, and he got the best lawyers money could buy and his crew was sitting in the stands right along with his family members, and Sam never looked so serious as when they had him stand and they asked for his plea…and he agreed he had done it…to the shocked looks of everyone there.

“Alright then I’ll ask,” The Judge said seriously, “ why in the name of the Maker would you do such a thing? You are a honest and serious young businessman, and to throw all that away…” he went on as Sam asked to speak and was given permission.

“Its all about the mathematics…” he said as even his Family looked lost.” If I am right, then the Xenons will return to being peaceful, if I am wrong then the only person in trouble here is me. One in trouble or thousands saved from fighting and killing Xenons. I honestly believe with those facts to look at that I had no better choice.” He said as the judge himself nodded that he did understand, but the trial had to go on either way.

“Then lets pray that you were right, but that changes nothing at the moment.” He got told and the trial started with evidence piling up against him, from a copy of the message and conversation with the Xenon, to scans showing him trying to communicate with one days before. It all pointed to a serious and honest try at communicating with a known enemy, and those were what the charges were based on.

“Did you or did you not have a planned and serious conversation with a Xenon M class fighter on Stardate 3220,month 7 at 4 pm?” he got asked as he said he did and laughed a little as faces all around the room looked white.

“Jealous?” Sam hinted as even the Military Lawyer looked lost for words for a second. “The Military has contacts watching the Xenon for ages now and not once did any of them try communication. If I’m right, and I think I am, then when this comes to light you’ll look like the traitors here not me. I’m trying to save lives not start another war.” He mentioned as the judge demanded he only answer when asked and Sam smiled and apologized for the outburst.

But the thought just hung there as people in the stands nodded seriously and whispered back and forth until the judge told them if they didn’t quiet down he’d throw them from the room.

“And what did you think you would gain, personally, form this action?” he got asked as he smiled again.

“Peace with the Xenon…maybe for centuries.” He added as heads nodded and smiles were seen and even the judge saw that things were not going their way.

“And you have the audacity to think you…a small time business man…can do what the entire Argon Military could not??” he got asked as he just laughed as silently as he could and even the judges face grew red at his attitude.

“I did , didn’t I?” Sam asked as the room got deadly quiet.

“We agree that you DID communicate with the Xenon, and we know what was sent, that’s why you are here now. You had no right, got no permission, to be the first to open communications with a faction that has been the enemy of Argon for centuries.” He got told and he asked if they were afraid that Peace would hurt their bottom line…since War was the purpose of the single purpose Military… and one General in the gallery jumped up and screamed at him for saying that.

“We are the Argon Military and we protect the Argon people, and you never asked permission to do any of this !” he screamed and was told to sit or be tossed out too and he grumbled but he sat.

“Peace is worth anything that I need to do to get it…isn’t that what a true Argon patriot would say at this point?” Sam asked as his father and grandfather looked so proud they might start cheering any second.

      Chapter 17: New…and Impressive… Evidence

But during all this the scouts reported no Xenon activity, and it started to look like Sam Silarn made done the impossible. But technicalities had been breached and because of that this trial still needed to go on, as a few more radical military leaders demanded. And as they got their wish…for now…the little scout ship that was watching the Xenon got a message, and it was not from Command at all and it got sent back and went through the correct channels and slowly made its way to the courtroom and he judge that demanded all evidence in this case immediately.

The next day when they returned to the trial new evidence was brought in…a screen opened and on it was a fleet of Xenon ships…and a huge carrier in the center. Hundreds of ships sitting peacefully and doing nothing wrong, and the message was short and clear…send your Ambassador…and the room was deadly quiet and Sam got a huge grin because he saw that his work had paid off, because they never sent a single message before.

“And there’s your proof!” They hard as Sam’s grandfather jumped up pointing to the screen,” Have any of you had such a positive effect in all these years?” he asked, and was escorted from the room for butting in.

But it had been said, and many in the room saw it was true and so they stopped the trial for now and decided they needed to send a person to see what was happening, but every officer sent was refused at the gate and had to leave.

“Cerberus S 13467 holds your Ambassador, and only he will be accepted.” Was the official response and after a few days a negotiator from the military flying Sam’s ship started in and as it entered it was surrounded by fighters and refused admission.

“Are all Humans this lack in intelligence?” They got asked and the little ship left again.

“You know what they want..” The judge demanded as many in the meeting agreed, “Isn’t it worth the risk?” he asked and finally after weeks of incarceration, Sam was back on board his ships, with a Intelligence officer at his side, and they entered the gate and was scanned and Sam came on the screen asking if everything was alright, and was told it was.

He was escorted to the big carrier and a door opened and he flew in. The ship was massive and he sat there talking and asking questions for days and finally he left and thanked them for their help.

He had hours of talks on file and when he returned to the courtroom he played them all as the discussions went on and on. They learned more about the Xenon, their civilization and their needs than any century before and after a while the trial just disappeared like ice in the sun, and Sam Silarn III was the official Ambassador to the Xenon People, and his little mining business got run by his new wife and he was seen going to meetings on many worlds until his dying day, and in all that time Xenons and Humans got along fine and new worlds were found and colonized …just the way it had been intended all along…and his name stood for taking a risk and winning, and through him his family was never more well known, or richer than ever before.

Soooo..next on to Magical Worlds and Parallel Universes...of a sort.
Do Witches exist? Did they ever? Or was all that talk just talk? Why has one never been found that could fly on brooms or throw fireballs or freeze things with a touch? The legends are there saying they can and did...but why have we never seen one? And if one arrived, would they be welcomed or burned alive like back then? And why do some people fear them so badly? Maybe there's more to these stories than meets the eye, you think?
